Off to France again in October and dithering over which travel method, ferry or tunnel ?
Will Dover be mayhem as recent times ?
Will I be stuck in the tunnel for hours as happened yesterday ?
Decision needs to be made this weekend really therefore, any informed opinions welcome.
Cheers.

I must say, the extra £100 is well worth not getting Covid and F%*k knows what else and is really appealing. 😉

Tunnel - you can pay with Tesco clubcard vouchers if you have any
So easy as long as it's running

Tunnel, we had stuff stolen from roof bars on ferries when everyone supposed to be up on the decks!! at least on the tunnel you stay with the car.

Because of where I live in the UK depends where I'm going these days, Portsmouth to Caen on the overnight in October for me then just a short drive to Le Mans, I took the tunnel in June as I was just north of Reims, things that dictate it for me now is the cost of ferry over tunnel given venue location add the fuel and tolls and there's never much in it now.

Wasn't so bad on the Tunnel when you could purchase the frequent traveller tickets made it worth it with the cost saving then.

Ferry for me. I like to have a fry-up and a nose around the duty free. 2 Liters of Rum for £22 last trip. Happy days!

Tunnel has duty free as well!
Wouldn't even contemplate the ferry these days

In October I would use the tunnel however in the summer it's the ferry. Tunnel is breaking down a fair bit at the moment and it's to unreliable.

Same for me. Tunnel is an extra 2 hours driving for me this side so is only worth doing if it saves me time and expense (tolls) on the other side. Most of the time the Portsmouth to Caen ferry is my preferred option for both cost and convenience

I've used the train a couple of times but have never really worked out how much time you save.
I know the train takes 35minutes and the ferry 90minutes but like the ferry there's still a waiting period before you board the train.
So how much time do you really save, and if you eat drink and wee on the boat then there's less of a need to stop at motorway services?
I'm undecided.

Ferry for us Newhaven to Dieppe closer to me than Dover and cheaper all round also convenient for the west side of France where we go

Once you've done the tunnel it's unlikely you'll go back. For a high top van it works out around £78 dearer on my next trip in October which is split by two people but for me the experience is so much better. Less waiting and boarding times, less likelihood of being disrupted by the weather, saves an hour of journey time which is a godsend especially on the way home. You can take your dog and don't have to leave it below deck and the security is much better as you are with the vehicle that contains thousands of pounds worth of gear. No sweaty farting Polish truck drivers or disinfectant and sick. If there are holds ups at Dover then there will likely be delays at Folkstone too and vice versa. Tunnel every time for me

Used both , and both had advantages . The train is really a conveyer , where often they chuck you on early , and it's great if your taking a dog. I also love Newhaven to Dieppe , 3 hours kip , and Rouen in 45 mins gives great timing for Limoges area . As it's only the one boat , hold ups are rare .
