I want a portable BBQ that packs away not too big but big enough to cook 2 peoples amount of food on a night sesh. Also not too expensive. £40 maximum? Any ideas people?

Cant recomend as i havent used one, but these 2 look ok for the money. Came across them last week whilst looking. Ive decided to wait a bit and get a cobb, but these look alright.

if you buy a BBQ make sure its got a lid to get things cooked properly and remain juicy

and not cremated on the outside and raw on the inside these are brilliant

Lid is essential

I got mine off Aosom.....it's brilliant and big enough for 2/3 people but light and solid. Cheap

Weber do the go anywhere which is brilliant but expensive

I have tried a few, any mostly go back to a simple bucket bbq that are as cheap as chips. I take 2 if im cooking for a few (they kind of fit inside each other)
Only get the kind that have a metal container inside for the coal, and drill a dozen or so holes in said container.

Use the best charcoal you can - Whittle and flame the best - oxford charcoal hardwood blend not far behind.

Use a " flamer " to light the coals & with a bit of air circulating in the bbq you will be ready to go in 15 mins.

Lid wise ..... for simple grilled meat / veg you do not need one. Obviously there are loads of dishes that would benefit from using a lid, but i can easily do a 10 day session just grilling (no lid) my lunch or eve meal and not get bored in the food im cooking.

grilling meat burgers steak ALL really benefit by being cooked fast at high temps

I have proved this time and time again without a lid you have the cooling from any wind that may be about you will get a higher temp on the outside resulting in the burger being overdone on the outside as the inside takes so much longer with a lid the temps are so much higher the heat penetrates and it cooks a lot more evenly and with less oxygen you get less burn at the higher temps apparently
I found all this out years ago when watching a BBQ contest in Australia and they laughed at the barmy Poms that cook without a lid on a grill

agree with everything that you say buddy, using a lid will cook things quicker for sure, and more evenly.

but you 100% don't need one to get a great result.

I find they reduce caramelisation (steam) and slow down fat render vs not using a lid.

You do get much much better smoke penetration tho when using a lid. Presuming your on charcoal / wood.

No, you're 100% wrong saying that Adam is 100% wrong.

Every Meze bar I've ever been to cook on open coals without a lid and their food is excellent.

its all about the temperature and distance, it's just easier to control with a lid

My local tesco express has small bucket BBQs with a grill and an additional coal bucket inside for a tenner at the moment.

Have a look on military kit,just bought a 45ltr highlander bag.I have had a few things from these,service has been superb and cheap (no carp tax)

Another vote for military first. Got loads from there and minus the carp tax

Not in the same league as a gas BBQ or one with lids etc but certainly is portable, is the UCO mini BBQ.

Constructed of stainless steel it folds completely flat including legs (still attached) and fits in its own small pouch which in turn fits easily into a standard holdall side pocket with room to spare. Mine actually lives in one of the internal pockets of my medium size Aqua bag.

Don't talk to me about Speero,when they first came out they were superb and responded to emails.They don't respond to anything anymore and don't answer their phones,if I did not have so much of the gear the lot would get sold.The tri-sleeves have been put back more than scozza's sex change op,its a joke and so are the people running them now

That's what I use all the time,is the Uco mini grill and fire pit,I like it as its compact and doesn't burn the grass..

Use mine as a twig stove as well,using dry twigs ,pine cones..dry grass for tinder....I roll some chicken wire,into a cylinder and place it at the bottom of the V,this all allows the air to circulate better...(was on pollution watch during the night,on Tuesday, camping by a local river,collating evidence of times when the toxic sludge is released at night)...kept it going for about 2 hours..

I start mine off with Hammaro waxed fire starter paper,I,also use a MSR 775 seagull pan with lid on it,its actually part of my Bushcraft and survival set up along with a lixada stick stove which takes a standard meths burner as well..

I might get a standard size at some point..

HI not relevant for this discussion based on price but I have just noticed the Skotti grill is now available from a few places with shipping to the UK. VERY expensive but really well made

I'm not an expert in these things. There appears to be a similar style of bbq on the Argos site if you search camping bbq. Currently £30. Might be complete pony obviously.
