Can anyone please recommend a decent spod / spomb reel ? I currently use a very old ‘baboon' emblem which has seen better days . Proper workhorse that I've certainly had my money's worth from . The retrieve is not great so looking for something to replace it with . I'd like something with a good rate of retrieve whilst not being overly heavy and something that's going to last . Two that I'd been looking into were the Daiwa emblem spod reel and the shimano ultegra spod reel , although the emblem appears quite heavy. Thanks for any help .

You wont go wrong with either the emblem spod or shimmy spod reel. I personally prefer the emblem but ive always used daiwa reels so thats why i picked the emblem. Ive used an emblem spod since they came out and its never once let me down.

I own and use both. Youre right, the emblem is heavier but goes on forever. The shimano is a nice reel to use and in 2 years has been problem free.. Use either with confidence.

Had the original emblem spod reel but moved on to a water that I used a pult, throwing stick or my modded spod which I could cast far enough with my fishing rods so sold the reel and rod on. Then went onto smaller estate lakes, river and canal. Recently bought a new spod rod for one particular water and have bought the emblem 35 scw thinking maybe the line lay may be better suited to braid.

Both will be decent. I have the Shimano Ultegra, nice reel, that's only because I use Shimano now, previously used Daiwa for a large part of my life

Thanks for the replies. I've mostly used Daiwa and they have been good . Ok , my tournies are a bit agricultural what with squeaks etc but they're solid and reliable . I'm looking for a good solid reel that's going to give me years of service . I was hoping that the ultegra may give me a little finesse as in smoother / lighter at the same time as giving me a good solid reel ., thanks.

My Ultegra spod reel completely seized up after 2 years - crap
My mates did the same. Yes we hammer them week in week out but 2 is poor.
The new Diawa emblem is far far better spod reel.

Ultegra Spod is a great reel. on't bother with the Aerlex Spod reel. Has the annoying 'feature' in that to cast you have to turn backwind on otherwise the bail arm will snap shut on you.

I've noticed that there are two emblem spod reels . The older one with the silver spool which I'm guessing must be around ten years old . Also the new emblem 35 I believe which is all black and been around for a couple of years. How do these two reels compare please ?

The emblem 35 scw spod reel is the one I've just bought, early days so will have to see how it stands up over time. Did have the original but chose the scw to see if it would make any difference to line bedding with thin braid.

Ive never owned the latest version but if its an improvement on the orignal it will be excellent but i cant see me ever changing from the original. I prefer the one touch folding handle of the original and with the custom reel king speed cap on it its the perfect spod reel for me.

I will nearly always cast with the anti-reverse on, the bail arm has snapped over on too many reels of various makes over the years.
I have an original Aerlex 8000 on my dedicated spod rod, but my spod and marker Hybrid rod has a Shimano Beastmaster 7000XTA reel on it.
Handy to use the front 'free spool' baitrunner to count the float up.
I managed to get a deal on 2 pairs of the Beastmasters, so it was just as easy and as cheap to buy 4 rather than 2 plus 1.
The current Beastmaster version will do the job if you are using the same rod for marker and spodding and are around £65 if you shop around
