Right, I've managed to get the opportunity to go fishing for the first time in 4 months tomorrow late notice on my friends but I've only got a small amount of fishmeal boilies at the bottom of the freezer which are now at least 8 months old.

At this time of year I tend to avoid them normally... plus I don't want to overfeed them. The other option I have is some sweetcorn ( a few kg's )

Or if not it's going to be singles

What would you go for? As there is no bait shops anywhere near me

No reason to change anything carry on using fishmeal but adding some corn could be a good idea.

A well put together fishmeal is arguably going to have a higher degree of cold water attraction than cereal type baits such as cell and live system PROVIDED the solubles are high and its not using temperature inhibitive ingredients, so you may well be fine

A big fat blank!!

1 fish out and three of us on, but there were 3 out during the week so it had started fishing ok.

I've confused myself with bait... I think I need to throw out all my hookbaits and pop ups and start again!

Never know what is best to use in the winter to be honest... I've always struggled even March / April time sometimes

Yep, common mistake once we get the first signs of spring and sunshine is what bait to use......water is still 4-6c or bloody freezing cold to the hands.......

Find the fish and chuck singles at them. Everyone seems to want to pile the bait in nowadays without a second thought. Had some serious success on singles, in the margins this time of year. Basically do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. Just take 1 tub of pop ups with you that you are confident using. I use single yellows, they do the job, absolutely no need to chop and change.

And cold in your chest waders when you go out to retrieve a cracked off rig!

Until the weather warms up as long as I have sweetcorn, some yellow, white and pink pop-ups I'm happy.

I take a few pellets and Vitalin, (I always have some in a bucket) and will make up small bags or meshes with some drained sweetcorn added.

You can always put more bait in if the fish do want it, but you can't take out too much

Always had success on single baits with a very small mesh bag hooked on filled with high attractive pellet mix. Avoiding the habit of piling in the bait too early on in the year.

I Love crumb and sweetcorn this time of the year, really attractive and Highly soluble in the colder water.
i use it in solid bags, mesh or a few spombs over a rig if it calls for it.
