Was looking at a set of reels the other week on a well known auction site , mint top end reels but with no boxes or spare spools only 18 months old . I believe the age is correct but how many of you have thought about why they don't have the boxes and spare spools , or is it just me ? Could they be stolen ? How many of you throw away your boxes for top end reels ? I certainly never have done , granted there will be the odd time folk have mistakingly thrown the boxes but for me I wouldn't touch them , is this just me or what

Not everyone religiously keeps boxes, they may not have the space, or they may have got damp in a shed or garage.

No boxes is fully understandable but no spare spools is a bit more suspect.
I don't tend to buy to sell on so I never bother keeping boxes. I like plenty of choice of line, so as many spools as possible. But.. when you see the silly money spare spools can go for you can understand why people do sell them. Maybe they needed a get a few quid together quickly.

Alway keep the boxes and they contain the paperwork and spare spools and bits that come with the reels when new. Would never buy reels without the spare washers and spools if they came with them when new. Some basia's don't come with spare spools though.

I mostly buy 2nd hand and never keep the boxes, I fish with the bloody stuff, whenever I sell anything they would come with any of the spares kit and spools but boxes? As for people selling boxes only, that grinders my gears

Not everyone is precious about stuff. Spare spools are often sold, boxes too. Bit of a leap to assume they're stolen.

I always keep boxes for everything. Ive even got the box my tempest bivvy came in and even my aqua unhooking mat box. Out of all my tackle reel boxes would be the last thing to go. Think ive even got about a dozen cardboard tubes from the rods ive bought over the years in the loft.

I don't think it would even cross the mind of most normal people that they might be stolen simply because there aren't boxes or spare spools.

I've kept my boxes for my reels you never know when you might need to send them away to be serviced and at least they would offer extra protection even though I can get unlimited boxes from work.

I'm obviously not normal because it has crossed my mind. I would be far more confident buying preowned if the boxes, spare spools, etc come with them. No guarantee of course but a good indication they aren't nicked.

Granted this could indicate that some are possibly dodgy but loads of people sell spare spools because they will never use them, look at eBay, it's full of them and throwing away boxes, bet more do generally than don't!

Having been on forums for a while now I did end up keeping my boxes for my ISOs in case I decided to sell them.

I think some people sell their boxes straight away to recoup some of the costs on reels.
Particularly as I've seen empty boxes go for stupid money, its cardboard FF*

If your wanting to sell on its paramount now you keep all boxes and paperwork, makes a difference price wise for sure. The worst thing is selling a set but only having 1 Box, or wrong box or even the different shade of tournie bag etc. Sounds ridiculous but I honestly believe it.

In the good old days, late 60's early 70's, you got a decent plastic presentation box to store your reel in. I still have somewhere all the plastic boxes for my 4 Mitchell 300's.
The only problem was, it took "Half a Day" to get the handle, spool and bail arm in the exact correct position to fit into the slot in the "Liner" inside the box.
Other than that, these days, I just collapse the boxes and stash them flat somewhere, but, as I never part with tackle, I'm not to bothered about what happens to them and usually they end up getting thrown away.
