A quick google and this was the answer.
There are between 2,000 and 2,500 fishing tackle retailers in the UK, typically owner-managed businesses.
There are 2.2 million coarse anglers and 0.8 million game anglers, each spending about £1,000 per annum on fishing.

That suggests there are 3 million licensed anglers which is probably about right
(2.2 coarse and 0.8 game)
Shame It doesn't allow for sea anglers

Yeah, 2.2 million course anglers. But the lisence stats say there are 800,000 course license holders. So must of them must be fishing illigaly?

At the start of the seventies when I was transitioning from match fishing to ‘spezzie' fishing I believe the number of anglers across all disciplines was put at 7 million

Not a chance of that, in my immediate friends and family which total around seventy only three are anglers. The numbers mentioned total 3 million is probably fairly close. Bearing in mind since the seventies every venue I know of is far busier and thee are far more venues.

As I've said for years owners clubs whatever should be responsible. They sell a ticket they should make sure you have a license. Hand me that knife I'm going to stab him your liable.

What a load of tripe. In the 70's we all fished canals rivers and lakes. Now we probably have enough pegs on commercial waters for the anglers.

Not down here, I grew up on the river and it was very rare to meet anyone else fishing unless there was a match on and the canal was the same. The carp lakes were only saw a fraction of the anglers they see today.

I always buy a license. The one time I didn't , because I wasn't fishing at the time. My boss invited me to go Pike fishing on the last day of the season. Yep I got caught and. £90 fine. I did catch a 15lb Pike. Most expensive fish I've ever landed. This was in 1984. I've always bought a license ever since. Even if I only fish a few days a year

The number are nowhere near those levels, and bearing in mind that around 25% of licence sales are 1 day or 8 day licences, and some of us fish with 4 rods, the number of licences will be higher than number of anglers
As evasion sits somewhere between 5-10% , its 30,000 salmon anglers tops, and 1 million course and trout.
