Too many now Tony mate, vastly outnumbered, all I can say is my mother and grandparents,RIP...glad they not around to see it..

Money ,greed ,ego and arrogance..

And did you know,ALL second home owners are being given another lot of money by our masters..6k,per property and they don't live in them..

Lots of homeless down here, hidden away..I have a 32 Yr old daughter, married, two degrees clever, articulate, and my son in law ,they live in a small 4 berth caravan..on a driveway..as they can't afford to buy or rent, yet oodles of empty property around ,enough to ease the homeless problem..

It wrong..really appalling..

That's it really...

100% agree with you Tony..

I spent a lot of time with both sets of grandparents when younger, they taught me to think and question, not to accept ,..

All I can say is...we are not far away from a sort of super elite system .

There has always been us and them..but now it's a form of rural clensing...its a form of monetary bullying,at the expense of an indigenous people..its customs and way of life..

It is what is..very sad mate, especially for those that love rural, special places..

People who own more than one home should be charged and then charged more for every other home they own.
It's just immoral to own more than 1 dwelling

Framey,agree mate..

Met someone before xmas, whose bought three second homes where I live..they still empty,I've just walked my dog past them..

Everyone is entitled to live where they wish at the moment on this small, corrupt island...the emphasis is on live..and become part of a community..not dominate, or bully out the young people who are born and raised in their area, and wish to remain..

Why don't the indigenous population sell their homes to other younger members of the indigenous population for a fair price, rather than cashing in and flogging their houses for over the odds to lawyers from London?

You make it sound like there's some sort of compulsory purchase scheme.

Even smaller properties are going for ridiculous money,in some parts of Devon and Cornwall property has risen by 116%.Some properties are going for 30/40 grand above asking price

This is a fair point...

Those City types can't buy someone's old family home unless someone from the family sells it to them...

My uncle owns a Manor House with holiday lets on the grounds in Cornwall, London born and bred.
The locals hated his guts so when he wasn't letting it all collect cobwebs and living on his yacht he patrolled with a shotgun and quad bike. Interestingly he eventually struck up friendships through firearms and agricultural vehicles

This is exactly the point I heard a local estate agent making on a local radio station whilst driving through Cornwall some 5-6yrs ago, he reckons he'd sold most of the waterfront properties in St Ives, and many went to second home owners, apparently none of the locals who sold up for many times what they'd paid for their homes asked for their homes to be sold to local families at below market value. Clearly the government/s over the past 30 years should've acted to prevent the current situation, but you cannot put the blame solely at the feet of the wealthy Surrey brigade. Locals sold up and made fortunes off the back of this, perhaps they should be equally as accountable?

So Jon, would you sell your house at 60 - 70% of its market value to that deserving couple down the road who can't afford the full price?

I agree with Framey any home that is not used as a main residence should be charged extra, ideally an eye watering amount extra that might make owning a property that stands empty for 90% of the year financially much less attractive.
It might even go some way to check the price rises and could help support our local businesses and schools that are suffering through lack of population out of the holiday periods.

What makes it worse is we are losing green fields to housing estates to replace these empty houses. Rubber stamped as a matter of policy from above of course.

London was sprawling green fields once upon a time. It's also awash with foreign investment/buy to let which prices the working class out of areas they work in.
If all that green space somehow generated tax revenue to keep your hospitals and schools going I could understand but...

Most of those green spaces lost used to feed us and even help keep our planet habitable.
Obviously too many people but we are not helping ourselves anyway.

I don't know. Possibly.

But I know I wouldn't sell my mum's rat infested woodshed to a market analyst from Islington for 250k and then moan about how all the townies are ruining the community.

Difference is Noj those London properties you're on about have people in them, often overcrowded. Spending in the local areas etc generating local and national income. This isn't the case with places like Cornwall/Lakes etc.
Empty properties generate nothing and force the altering of landscapes (for the latest serfs to commute from, too serve the wealthiest and live in) and obviously demographics.

“ sold to local families at below market value”
That's the big problem, I'm sure we would all like to do the right thing in whatever we do but how many of us can afford, or even have the will to essentially give away a few years earnings to achieve it.
In any case for a “sell to locals only policy” to work it would need 100% participation, otherwise all it would do is to further increase prices for the reduced houses on the free market.

Difficult to blame the wealthy Surrey brigade or even the locals who sell as they are both trying to do the best for their families and future.

As you say governments should have acted but many in government have a vested interest in this. According to a planning officer there is a lot more connections and consequential pressure than first appears. We were discussing the loss of local farmland to houses when a huge number are in effect empty.

I agree mate, that will often be the case. But some of those landlords are also the owners of these second/holiday homes; exploiting hard working families, damaging rural communities and lining their own pockets.

Aren't they already charged double and triple council tax in some parts of the West Country. Landlords have been battered by tax reform over the last 6 years with it now in full force.

Careful what you wish for, if there's no wealthy people around or it's not financially viable to work hard and make a decent living to the point where you can buy a second home, you force the people earning the money and paying the tax, providing work and therefore more tax income into submission and the country becomes even more of a ****show with everyone expecting everything handed to them on a platter. Listen to some of the ridiculous suggestions in this thread alone, people selling property at below market rate
