I've currently got a set of Big bait runner LC that I use and are still going strong although they are not light and possibly a bit dated some would say. I've been offered 3 sonik tournos XD 10000's and actually like the look of them and the fact they have quick drag. Has anybody had any experience with these or can compare them to the shimanos??

Or I could go the other way and get a set of Ultegra ci4 14000 xtc which I've seen locally for a decent price??

Steer clear of the Soniks is my advice. Modern shimano's will be much better but not as well built as your LC's
Personally, I'd be tempted to keep them

I see what your saying but all the reviews are good. I've always been a Shimano fan, but I am curious as to wether these cheaper reels are as good as they say. I am looking at changing mine but cant decide which way to go.

reviews will be good, because video bloggers/magazines get the reels for free, and they will never say they're pants because they will lose valuable advertising revenue from the said company. Best reviews are on forums like here where its an honest unsponsored review. Stick with the LC

If it's a review from either a named anglers or one of the mags then ignore it. They will never leave negative reviews as they won't get paid to do reviews...

Lc are a bullet proof reel like the daiwa infinity I wouldn't change as said by others imo sonik reels aren't in the same universe as these

The Ultegra is a good reel, just don't expect the same longevity and build quality as the LC. They just don't make them like that anymore
There's good reason why the LC's still sell for £100 a reel in good nick. They'll outlive you and me I imagine!

I've used Shimano bait runners since mid 80's and found them faultless but about 4 years ago I wanted something that would cast further and wind in a bit faster as I was fishing on a bigger water. Winding in 3 rods when you pack up on a freezing winters day fishing about 70 yards is not fun with the slow retrieve of the Shimano baitrunners
I bought 3 Mitchell Avocasts on recommendations I saw on this forum, terrible reels, line twist was horrendous, so I slung them into back of the shed.
I saw 3 Sonik Tournos 6000's Baby pits on EBay going for about £120 and I snapped them up not really knowing what to expect. The RRP was about £70 each at the time.
When I used them, I could not believe how good they were, fantastic little reels, especially just having to turn the spool cap half a turn to tighten the drag from very free to tight and a brilliant drag for playing fish. And no line twist and they cast well. Without hesitation, I bought another two as backups.
And as I liked them that much, I bought another set of 3 larger Tournos 8000's.
But, whether they last as long as my Mitchell 300's from the 60's which I still use and my Shimano's from the 80's without dropping to pieces or wearing out is another thing I won't know for about another 40 to 60 years, but I'll be well dead by them. Other than that, they tick all the boxes for me that I can test them out with

Are you talking about the 8000 size baitrunners or the long cast reels which i think the op is talking about? the lc's have the same size spool as the xt technium they are interchangeable. They have no probs retrieving line from 70 yds
The lc's were built when i think shimano's build quality was very good the only drawback with them (for some anyway) was the weight of them.
I wouldn't swap lc's for newer cheaper and imo inferior built reels

Do you know if the shimano ultegra XT (japan) has the same spool as the long casts?
They look the same to me.

Yeah, reviews in magazines are much less reliable than the opinion of people based on a forum.
There's only one post from someone who uses/has used them, on here, the rest is the usual forum opinions based on nothing

To be honest i dont know, the only 10000 ultegra spool i tried had the newer torsion spring and plate clicker and didn't fit this is the clicker design most people have problems with and is on most of the newer shimano's i have seen
The long cast and xt tech have a tension spring and plate for clicker which i think is a far better design as i kinow in 20 years i haven't had an issue

Excellent for the ££££££ IMO
Smooth and line lay is superb. Clutches good

Thanks guys, I am gonna give the soniks a miss. I did however pick up a set of Ultegra ci4 14000 for a bargain price. I'll hang onto my LCs, I am sure I'll dig them out one day, or my lad might make use of them when he's a bit older.
