Thinking about getting some new scales - Any thoughts on which to consider and ones to avoid?
I've currently got the original black fox ones and a set of 120lb Rueben Heaton specimen hunters.

Why not just stick with the Reubens? No need wasting money when you have already got one of the best set of scales in the industry.

The latest fox digis are brilliant and super accurate. Nice and compact as well.

I've always wondered why they dont make rechargeable digital scales. The risk of batteries running out at the vital time has always put me off digital scales.

never understood this ? rechargables go flat your stuck !!.........but its easy to carry a set of spare batteries

Most people carry a powerbank so most people would always have them to charge up while at the lake when not being used

As Gerry says its a lot easier just to put new batteries in than faffing around waiting for a powerbank to charge them up as that could take hrs plus your have a port that you would charge them from that isnt waterproof so water would get in and there knackered.

I always have a power bank with me hence the comment. Batteries are expensive and bad for the environment so It makes total sense to have rechargeable wherever possible. By your Logic Gerry a rechargeable bivvy light or head torch would be no use either, but rechargeable is pretty much industry standard on those now. I don't see why digital scales should be any different.
It just means carrying a power bank instead of batteries. No different if you forget either is it?

I wish digital scales offered the ability to zero a set sling & save it. If they did I'd be in.

I use cheap eBay luggage scales that weigh to 40kg. Cost £5 ish.
They work and are as accurate as my Reubens and Avon's. And you can zero them against the sling; but I don't bother.
They are also small - so now the others stay at home as I just do short sessions and travel light.
PS what is a power bank ?

No good when you go to way a fish though and the battery is flat. You will have to plug them into a power bank and wait ages for them to charge before you can use them at least with batteries you put new ones in and there ready. I only fish for barbel now so you cant sack them up and weigh the fish later when your batteries are recharged. Barbel need returned as quick as possible.

. . .not sure you'd be getting an accurate reading . . .the weigh sling could weigh heavier / lighter than the previous saved zero weight dependant on how wet/dry it is . . .no bother to zero every time on digis - its a single button press!

Why is it that so many people who go on about ‘only fishing for barbel now' spend so much time commenting on a carp fishing forum?

Because i carp fished for 30 years when it was actually good not the circus it is today which is why I dont go anymore. The forum is not just a carp forum is it?! Open your eyes and you might actually see that theres more sections other than just carp. I also use the same gear for barbel as I did for carp so its all relevant.

they make RECHARGEABLE AA`s and AAA`s dont you ? not only that the new ones are good to go holding their charge for up to a year
so thats makes as YOU put it total sense to me
Philips Ready to use 1000mAh AAA These batteries are the best AAA rechargeables on test as of 2021 acording to the Which battery tests or Panasonic Eneloop Ready to Use come out very good too
I do however use a rechargeable head torch as its not made with any other option but of course it can be charged during the day if needed so bit different to a set of scales

Some people are ANGLERS !!
and fish for all species !
YES ! I mainly fish for Barbel as I did in the 50s these days as I find it hard lifting 60lb carp lol
but thats not to say I dont still fish for carp
some of us have been Carp fishing before it was the fashion !! for instance this picture of me was from the 1960s

I don't solely fish for carp, far from it. My observation was that barbel anglers like to bore on about more than others. Same goes for people who fish the tidal Trent, every post has to squeeze it in 
Anyway..to the OP... I would get you Rueben's serviced and stick with them, they come back like new. No need for batteries or chargers

for wandering off your original question I have a set of Rueben Heaton specimen millennium edition and sent them off for a service they test them on arrival and give a printout then after servicing they repeat and print out so you can see exactly if and how they were out also as with mine the case was renewed so it was just like a brand spanking new set of scales
Interestingly !!! the scales were almost perfect before the service and these are over 20 years old !
I also purchased a set of Wychwood T bar scales 60lb a more compact lighter scale and I like these long and thin shape fit in my chair or rod bag
I set up a tripod and tested them with a 25litre water container with various amounts of water against the newly serviced Rubins they were spot on all the way !!!
so I leave the Rueben Heaton speci in the car JUST in case I get a very special fish and want a conformation double weight check and use the T bar scales all the time

IMO I think its very important to have at least 1 set of scales you know will be 100% I would get your Rueben Heaton serviced and then check them against your old Fox digis you may find they are spot on too ?
IF? you have your heart set on buying a new set of scales I would buy the New AVID DIGITAL SCALES these are getting rave reviews and seem like the best buy at the moment
take no notice of the I dont like the idea of them comments trust me lots of Anglers both here and in Europe are using these reliable scales and all USERS so far are giving glowing reports but your money your choice do your research good luck mate

Sadly they are possibly the worst scales ever sold !
certainly the worst scales REUBEN HEATON have ever made thats for sure NORMALLY people associate the name Reuben Heaton with quality accurate scales ?? god only knows how they have got this so wrong ??
there are so many people have had trouble with wild inaccurate readings you would be hard pushed to get 3 sets straight out of the box to read the same this was coming from a dealer that got sick of refunding and returning them

I've gone for a set of the newer fox scales for now - I might consider another set, maybe the Wychwoods too...
I didn't really look into the avids - The fox seem to get generally positive reviews though...

I wished fox had stuck with the folding handles,I still prefer the needle spinning around.They should do digital scales with a dial face,best of both worlds

Oh!
I did have those 9000 series tubular digital efforts from Reuben but they were absolute rubbish, never did get a working set. I got the analogue flyweights as I thought they might be an improvement but they feel like an Argos special tbh.

Bit harsh. If a head torch can stand up to the rigours of being on your forehead in a tent while coarse fishing with carp rods the people deserve to know
