Hi I have an issue using Whychwood crimping pliers and Whychwood 0.6 crimps.
When I test the 25lb boom between two pulling tools it always slips then snaps somewhere near the end of the crimp.
I'm placing the crimp the correct way in the pliers and ensuring even distance of crimp is sticking out of both ends to give the flared effect.
I then just squeeze as hard as I can. However every time I test it it snaps under maximum pressure.
I'm making small loops either end of the hooklink and blobing the ends ?
Anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong

Crimps dont make it indestructible. If you are pulling hard enough it will break. 25lb of pressure isnt a great deal for an adult.

Thanks but it always slips first then snaps at crimp, pretty sure I couldn't snap just boom material between my hands ?

Are the crimps breaking? Didnt korda change the material of their crimps to brass because of an issue with the boom and the original ones?

Can't really comment on the snapping or the crimps , doesn't sound right tho ....., but you'd never put anywhere near 25lb of pressure on the hook with a rod , hold a lead and get ya mate to bend into it , you'll be amazed how little pressure is there..

Im sure i read in the pst its about 4lb of pressure with a rod and line. T/c and line choice dependant obviously.
But 25lb between your hands isnt a lot at all, and youd easily be able to put that onto a short length of line

No The crimps are not breaking the boom does at one end or the other, it starts by slipping then snaps very close to the crimp.

Try with a crimp on one end and a standard loop on the other - that way you learn whether the crimp is better than a normal knot.
If the crimp gives before the loop then it needs attention.

Never had a crimp go with boom definitely user error unless your literally pulling for a break. Can't be crimping correctly.

So what am I doing wrong then ? Are you using Whychwood crimps and tool ?
Really can't understand it myself, as I say crimp is in correct way, even both sides , and squeezing hard ?

I've tied loops with a figure of eight knot at each end and it's far stronger, the boom appears to slip initially then snaps?

Grab your scales and see how much force you are pulling with. You will surprise yourself

try the Wychwood one end and the Korda the other end and test
Korda 6mm boom snap at 19lb (scale test) more than double you need to land a fish.
In reply to Post #1
Put your crimped boom with one end at a scale and start pulling. Have a look at which force it snaps.
Do the same with 2 knots in the boom.
It will easy your mind if you see the force needed to break the boom section.

I assume you've done this , are you saying one us better than the other.
I also assume that there is no trick I'm missing here, I'm crimping correctly they just snap at that pressure?
It always starts with the boom slipping in the crimp which shreds the boom material then snaps , can't understand why ?

Are you saying korda ones are better ? Have you some experience with both?
Would Whychwood pliers work with Korda crimps ?

The only way to find out which crimp works best for YOU is to test one type against the other.
here is another suggestion; crimp both ends but with a swivel in one of the loops. Then tie some reel line to the swivel and use your normal knot to fix that to something. Then pull and see what breaks first.
If the crimp goes, then you have a problem, if the mainline knot goes then the crimps are strong enough.

no you assume wrong lol I havent done it but I do have both sets
the Korda ones were a problem but then they changed the crimps by then I had lost confidence and bought the Wychwood set and for me I think they are much better I did not have any problems
in a fishing situation your mainline would probably fail long before a crimp so maybe you could test that ?

Used Wychwood and Korda crimps, both carry carp tax but are ok. But then I use Amnesia which is much cheaper and I like the bit of stretch it has.
Prefer crimps from a sea angling supplier on Ebay much cheaper and seem easier to use.

Thanks, I lost a fish the other day when the crimped boom failed , that's why I started testing it, the 25lb boom appeared to have snapped at the crimp.
When I did tests the tested hooklinks snapped the same way as mine had when I lost the fish. ie at the crimp.
Lack if confidence in them now.
Asked the question on here in case someone could see I was doing something wrong, or could suggest a solution . If that's not the case and I am crimping correctly then I'll look at a different solution.
Do you think Korda crimps would work with Whychwood pliers ?

I just did a test for you.
8" of 25lb Ace Riga-mortis line, Korda 0.6 Krimp, Wychwood Crimper tool.
Loops were 15mm. Ends were unblobbed
The pull effort was sufficient to make me concerned the rig puller tools would pull apart.
No line slip whatsoever.
Next test was with a black builders bucket and water.
The loop failed at 22lb (that's the bucket filled about 3 inches from the top by way of comparison ) by the line pulling through one crimp.
Both Krimps had flared at each end as normal with the Wychwood tool which is narrower than the Korda one.
Conclusions;
A: You are Garth and I claim my £5.
B: Use a different line.
C: As I have no picture of your crimp, are you 100% sure the crimp is not getting twisted and then flattened in the jaws of the crimper ? The crimp must stay upright . With my crimping example the jaws do not meet exactly, there is still a slight gap.

I use the korda 0.6mm crimps and pliers and 25lb boom. Also, crimp using the large hole in the pliers. just make sure its in the notch properly and squeeze the pliers as hard as you can. Hand on heart not had an issue.
...That said I do use the Gemini booms now instead for convenience which are outstanding and neater.

Very tempted to tie a fig of 8 knot, but wonder hiw bulky that would be with 25lb boom, and how that would effect pulling it through weed , of which there is a lot on my lake.

Thanks for your help, I see you used korda crimps with Whychwood pliers, this obviously works for you, so may try that !
Yes crimp is correct way in pliers I've been meticulous in getting that right in case that was the issue.
Just to double check when you look at the Whychwood pliers with the 6mm hole at the top, the crimp should sit in the pliers like a figure of 8 lay on its side , or like looking down the barrels of a side by side shotgun, oo like this ?

What kind of rigs are you using the boom for? How big do you need the loop to be? I think the hook and lead will catch a lot more weed than a figure of 8 knot in the boom. You might even get away with using an overhand loop knot in such heavy material.

Drop the lead, and hope hook is inside the carps mouth so out of the way ! But yes thought of overhand knot , haven't got around to testing that yet.

I have both Korda and Wychwood crimps and pliers.
I much prefer the Wychwood tool and components .
I only used the Korda Krimp in the Wychwood tool to test for you.
The crimps need to be like 8 in the jaws, like an over under shotgun, one half of the crimp in each jaw.

Thanks that is how I've been doing it, not confident in it now provably just going to knot it , got 24 to 25lb pulling on scales with figure of 8 knot before it snapped !

Snapping... Bizarre
Under extreme pressure it should just shed the outer and slip through.
Never had a problem with the newer Korda Krimps, Boom and the Korda pliers.

Yeh that's what happens, slips, sheds, then snaps , it's the slipping I don't like, it seems to slip under average pressure. As I said below I will just knot it in the future . Lost a good fish earlier this week on a water you only get a few chances so no confidence in it now.

I think you are squeezing the pliers too hard. Try just compressing the crimp down, not completely crushing it.

Thanks mate, what ever the technique is I haven't got it, I'm getting 24lb pull on my scales with a figure of 8 knot so that will do for me.
I like the look of crimped rigs, but prefer the one of a carp in the bottom of my net, so can do without them.
Thanks to everyone who commented.

As I said I've crush down as hard as I possibly can using the larger slot with the 0.6 crimps. I'll re-iterate never had one go. So something is a miss here. However you do need to do what you feel confident in I totally get that.

I see you use Korda crimps and pliers, I've been using the Whychwood ones, not inclined to buy another set when to be honest a fig 8 knot is fairly minimal and covered in putty anyway.

If you're using crimps buy some good ones AFW are great and buy some proper pike crimp pliers, stick to the Pike stuff with crimping

I use sea angling crimps and heavy duty crimping pliers. They work a treat and the crimps seem easier to use than the Korda or Wychwood ones, the pliers certainly are.
