I've been sorting out my folks house and come across the old drinks cabinet...
Lurking in amongst the johnnie walker and grants I've come across a bottle of strathconon. It wasn't one I knew so did a bit of Google and saw some crazy prices for the similar looking good bottles.
Have I got some serious whisky here?

What an unnecessary question in the title, of course there's an expert on the subject here...

I did that bit already. Apparently since my dad died, my old mam had been sitting next to a £250 bottle of scotch!
I'd just like to know whether or not I should open the thing and toast the two of them or find the alcohol equivalent of antiques roadshow...

Over the years i have been given bottles of whisky at christmas off my customers when i was a landscaper,never had the heart to tell them i could,nt stand the stuff, i have a cupboard full of it , Never had one worth that much though , do you reckon he bought that Mal or was given it ? Thats alot of money on one bottle unless he was very well off, I know bottles can cost thousands but for most folk £200 ish on a bottle is not common i would,nt have thought ?

With all my family being Scottish and having spent a year working up there I tried a different scotch every night for that year and have holiday up there on many occasions but still not an expert. In all honesty there are thousands of different blends and we all have different tastes and price means sod all as to if you like it or not, open it and toast your parents and if you like it carry on toasting them till its gone.

It's likely been there's for a long time. I had a bit of a look around and it's one that was discontinued so is rare - hence the crazy price. The old and rare whisky site has 2 in stock.
There was an old Harvey's Bristol Cream in a 1970's bottle. My lady has already sampled that one
Also an unopened bottle of Marsh's Sass which won't mean much to most but was a staple in the diet of Barrow kids back in the '80s . A set of old Sea Angler vhs tapes with John Wilson too. All I need now is something to play the things on and I've a great evening ahead!

If it's the 12 year old there fetching a few quid.Just put it on whisky hammer.Pop it in the post at wait.They do the advert and description, takes about a month but you could get a good return.Bottle condition and box plays a good part on value too.I've sold quite a few bottles through them and they keep about 5%.

I've been heavily into collecting whisky for the last 3 years, I've spent in the region of 10k but have easily already double in price.
If your in no rush to get rid of I would recommend keeping it, please feel free to PM me for any advice.
Whisky auctions are always great for the selling but no so much for the buyers as they are lumped with the fees.
Depending on the condition of the bottle, they could be cork in the bottle, seal broken or box damaged will make a vast difference in resale price.

It's without box so perhaps less of the goldmine I first thought. Still might be a nice addition to someone's collection though.

What whiskies are you buying? I got a bottle of Mac 18 single malt 2020, thought it might be a good year with covid, etc..
I plan to buy one a year and stashing them.
Do you own any double cask whiskies?

wanted to ask about your storage, are you holding or using a bond holding service (free from duty, vat and delivery costs) if you are doing it as an investment.

I have mainly single malts from the western isles, really peaty
Been to the Bowmore distillery and have some Bowmores, lagavoulin, laphroig, Jura, story of my childhood holidays and now something I drink...about twice a year, neat with 5 ice

You need to look for limited editions and what makes money at auction.
Macallan and Arbeg normally do well, with a bit of research you will pick it up in no time, also founders bottles i,e distillery's that are getting built The Lakes, Wolfcraig and 8 doors will do well in the future but you will have to wait 3+ years for your first bottle.
On buying one a year you would want it to be a good bottle, ive been buying between 2 and 5 a month, Arbeg had a limited release today for committee members at 10am which sold out within 20 minutes which i manged to purchase.
As for storage I've got mine on a shelf, room temperature is a must and out of direct sunlight I've recently bought a couple of bottles from Cyprus to finish a collection and got stung by import tax due to brexit so i wont be doing that unless its a absolute must.
