So the government is to bring in the Animal Sentient Bill.
Basically, the definition is any animal with a backbone is to be protected against cruelty.
Interesting times ahead for our sport.

This came to my attention a while ago.
The bill also proposes the banning of glue traps for vermin.
More wokery from Gov. and I am far from convinced that that Nut Nut is not a driving factor behind the fat oaf's policies.

Ironic. Seeing as plenty of the people making these woke suggestions don't have a backbone themselves
If not wanting animals to be subject to cruelty is woke, sign me up
They won't ban fishing, the revenue is too high. But a limit on stock density would surely be welcome?

I'm not a bit surprised...
I note several other green agenda based bills have suddenly appeared, from no where..some are now saying that Covid is the smokescreen to divert attention from some of these potential new laws or freedom removers..
I look on the government website sometimes..

Couldn't agree more. The commercial management of fisheries is what is putting our neck in the noose.
Nobody of any importance will be hurt if angling is banned, they would sell their children for votes.

Man drops big fish and breaks it's tail off - outrage!
Law to protect animals from cruel practice - outrage!
As said - fishing won't be banned. Maybe some more guidelines to abide by which won't be all bad.

Too many 'nature loving' towny greenies around, who have no real understanding of nature, and sadly they have infected government and society.
The real population who live in the country have no say in what is happening.
Look at the comments and posts on various threads, or by people like Ken T and Wandle on 'end of an era' thread.
Those who actually know and understand countryside nature are being frozen out by the 'elite'.

My village, an old market town, they are building a huge housing estate on top of the land where the market is. They were given planing approval based on the promice they would build a new market elsewhere for the town. Well, the new market hasnt been built yet, and it looks like their spare money is getting eaten up becasue they have just had to knock down the first lot of houses they built becaise of subsidence. The housing estate is right inbetween farm land, and the Abattoir, so you can guess whats going to happen as soon as they move in....

Apparently the bill was brought in for ethical treatment of farm animals and as such I agree with it. Treat animals humanely but this encompasses everything with a back bone, so shooting, fishing etc has been pulled into this bill. But remarkably as it's mainly for the protection of livestock and other animals Halal and Kosher slaughter houses are exempt! WTF!!!
As it only covers animals with back bones it's open season on the political elite. This is not an encitement to cause harm

Devotees show there allegiance by offering food items to the occupants. Who if feeling that the worshiper is deserving may join them at the waters edge for a commemorative photograph.

This bill is to replace an EU rule that had been in place for many years and we are no longer covered by since leaving the EU. The main news outlets reporting on this 'new' bill all seem to have missed this little 'detail' out as it probably made the story a lot less interesting
No doubt 'our 'version' of the old Article 13 will have a few twists and turns added just to make us different to the EU, having spent all that money leaving we had batter make sure we are different now

Mal, I don't think money is the issue. Far more money involved in Hunting with both dogs and guns and look how that turned out.
We are just seen as the fellas on straw baskets sat by a canal. I think if you put it to a public vote and said the "right" things, we would be finished.

As much as, as anglers we may dislike it, we really need to be part of the Countryside Alliance.
They put forth the case for hunting, shooting, fishing AND rural communities.
I see them doing more than the Angling Trust did. AT may have worked with them to get us to be allowed to be fishing during lockdown, (I don't know the answer).
In fact I wonder if AT and the CA should be part of one organisation...
I do know the Countryside Alliance just had a bill overturned put forward in government about gorse and heather moor burning. Labour had put in that they would not allow burning, but the CA was able to prove that controlled burning prevented major heathland fires as has happened in the North Yorkshire Moors and near Manchester.
The problem with many laws, whether animal sentient or otherwise, is that someone will use it for the wrong reasons. I can totally understand prevention of animal cruely, but we have to kill animals for food if we as a person eats meat. Yet production of chickens or their eggs, standing up in their own excrement in a shed is not illegal, even if unethical.
'Battery' pigs, that never see outside before being taken to Jeff Mallock the knackers yard...
(Anyone remember James Herriot?)
Far better now to be eating organic produce purchased from a farm shop or butcher than a supermarket.

The countryside alliance are thugs and anyone that is associated with them deserves to be tarred with the same brush IMO. I absolutely despise fox hunting in all of its iterations and have seen firsthand what some of these guys do. I won't go into detail here but quite a few have appeared before the courts. Stiffer sentences are very much welcomed but normally its their mates giving out the slap on the wrist.

Aidey - that's a fair point.
I suppose I'd say that there's probably more support / less vitriol when it comes to us harmless blokes on wicker baskets than there is for the white jodhpur / tally ho brigade...
Plus - fishing is still regarded as a sport / pastime that's accessible for all rather than an elite upper class.
as said - I can't see a ban, maybe some guidelines. The point about this aw simply replacing the existing EU one that we'd already been working to is a good one. I expect there are a lot more of these happening.

Folks I read a lot about appeasement from Angling Trust, refusing to speak out against issues that might be unpopular with the general public, it is the road to disaster.
The greens, the liberals, the vegans, the animal rights people, they all want angling banned, anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. We should be fighting on every front against any issue that affects angling, be that otters, cormorants, alleged cruelty, the NT wacky ideas on removing carp, not picking and choosing our battles like the AT suggest.
And yes we should have stood shoulder to shoulder with the Countryside Alliance over the hunting issue.
I'm in my 60's I will probably be okay but you young guys, I feel for you, the days of fishing are numbered but we can go down fighting and you never know common sense might win out but not unless we speak out.

That's the issue, people are too scared to speak out about certain issues, the barbel society got a lot of stick for their petition, but we all know otters are a huge threat, and at least they had the bottle to speak out about the issue.
Anglers seem to think that the general public care, they dont, they have far to many important issues to care, the sooner people take that on board the better.

You see thuggery on both sides nick. But I'm sorry, the fox hunts will never occupy the moral high ground and yes passions run high on both sides. But to see the terrier men do what they do to these magnificent animals would leave anyone with a compassionate bone stunned by their coldness and cruelty.
Angling can learn from this, the platform needs to be how anglers are integrated into nature and encouraging it to thrive through cleaner water. Actively involved in the fight against pollution of our waterways bringing polluters to the courts. Fighting for natures spaces to thrive, wider hedgerows so raptors can hunt, etc etc etc. There's so much we can do to turn this around and bring the public onside. You are not going to do this arguing for culls etc. Work with nature not against it. I'm no tree hugger and feel angling brings more to our countryside than it takes out. But sadly there are always a few that darkens the doorway.

Thats a fair reply, thank you.
I think we have many problems within fishing, countryside hunting and shooting fraternity, and either way, we are too fragmented. Fishing is split within its own 'disciplines'; match fishing, sea fishing, carp fishing, pleasure anglers (stick out a rod for silver fish, not interested in matches, but happy to catch anything) and specimen angling, specifically for big fish even fly fishing. The Angling Trust might be supposed to represent them all, but does it all of the time?
Then we have the shooting and hunting fraternity, where overpopulation of say deer, or even non-indigenous species like muntjac need to be culled, or the grouse and pheasant shooters are covered by the Countryside Alliance.
The CA do represent rural communities as well, those who live in the country, as well as these pursuits.
I must admit I am on the fence on fox hunting, foxes have become a nuisance in some areas due to overpopulation, yet the bugles and beagles of the hunts is not the nicest way to despatch a fox.
I am also on the fence regarding kosher and halal meat, how it is killed. We are supposed to kill only 'unconscious' animals for our food, yet for hundreds, even thousands of years we did it how we did it. A chase, arrow, a bullet, a knife, or whatever.
Halal meat is as it was done for thousands of years in the Arab world, a prayer to Allah (God) said for thanks, then despatched.
It is probably as cruel to catch fish from the sea before giving it the priest on our bass limit.
The main problem as I have pointed out is town greeny nature lovers have no actual knowledge of nature, or even where our food comes from. They just see it as furry or cuddly, or just as cruel. They don't see that their vegetarian or even vegan diet does still damage the environment, with foods that need to be transported across the world.
Even supermarkets are part of the problem, cheap chicken, cheap pork purchased and imported into the UK at standards and prices lower than our own UK farmers can do it for. These supermarkets also add so much water into these meats...
Thats a fair reply, thank you.

I might be wrong but I'm sure I watched a Mark Pitchers vid recently where he's fishing over near his then girlfreinds house and he mentions this as being law in parts of Europe. Something to do with only being to inflict pain of capture if its for the table so technically by putting the fish back your breaking the law....doesn't seem to be enforced much does it?

Not until fishery owners and others in the industry realised there was money to be made. I fished a few places in Germany and some of the older anglers couldn't understand why I put them back and some weren't too happy that I did either.
