So with some recent testing on a local water it seems that the sharpened hooks I was using start rusting very quickly. I think it's due to the type of water it is as I've not had this issue on other waters but even after 4 hours there were significant signs of rust so I'm now not going to use sharpened hooks on there.
Can anyone recommend some strong reliable strong hooks out of the packet please?
I don't really want to use the Kamukura one's as I bought a pack and the points were too thin for my liking.

I've always found the Fox hooks are good out of the bags and they are made from a harder material than other hooks
... Hard to sharpen following a fish capture, in the old days I'd just replace the hook..

Out the pack has got to be either carp spirit or angling iron. I do prefer the angling iron personally.
J precision hooks by a long way they are hand sharpened plus I like Gardner mugga hooks if I'm using something else, also I would use the little pot Korda do to protect hook points from rusting or going funny problem is I can't remember what it's called lol
But J precision have never rusted or had any problems with them at all very good quality

I use J precision, and only on one water did I have issues with them rusting. However, take a look at the JAG hook pens, they sorted the issue and his hooks are spot on. On every water since that I haven't needed them which is typical 😂

Amazing the question has to be asked when you are paying good money from top companies for an item that has to do 1 job you'd think the least you would get is sharp hooks in every packet... its wrong .. I use gardner and owners but they come up pretty small but sharp... ;-)

I've recently been trying the ESP Cryogens. I've had a few fish on them, albeit only doubles from a non snaggy water, but every hook point was spot on out of the packet. I didn't feel the need to sharpen any of them. I will let you know how I get on longer term with them if I eventually hook something decent.

@Braders1978 thats the one for some reason I couldn't remember what it was called and I've packed my bags up to go fishing so didn't fancy unpacking it all to get my box out

ESP cryogen. All really sharp, constantly nicking myself with them when tying a rig. Pretty much have to sharpen any other hooks tbh.

I must admit i mainly use Kamakuras.
But i would recommend the ESP Cryogens also.

Jason Hayward's hooks are amazing, super sharp but also strong. The j precision hooks are very very sharp but find the point is a bit on the fragile side compared to jays hooks. Would only use the j precision for pop ups not for anything on the deck
After those two the angling iron hooks are really good but not as sharp as the jay hayward or j precision hooks

Agree with Colors on this, I actually came off J Precision as they turned over too easy. Had lost 4 on the bounce on them, went onto Jason's, landed 12/13.
He's done an amazing job on the Trighammer's I had from him, deadly!!

Trig-hammers are sharp out of the pack, and the metal is stronger than a lot I have used. They do turn over but only after a lot of fish, not one or two.
Most of the time I use Krank out the packet on runs waters, and 'Kama Sutra' Kranks on syndicate waters

I used to use ESP Raptor hooks, must be around 10years ago.
I landed 7 or 8 fish on 1 hook until I turned the point when I overcast into a tree. The first fish was 26lb, the rest were high singles or low doubles.

See I've found completely the opposite I really liked the trig hammers and caught a lot of fish on them but found the hooks go over very easily after 2/3 fish sometimes even just the one fish would do it, not just one pack either this was over the span of about 6 months from multiple packs.
I would use them again though great hooks I just prefer a beaked hook now

I just picked up some of the new Fox Edges super-wide gapes, they are very sharp indeed...

Do like the look of this pattern. Was into the old Nash Gapers but they stopped making them.
Only problem with Fox is they change their patterns all the time and it's bound to be the one you like they swap.

Despite what has been said. J precision hooks rust, and have done on every water i fished when I used them which was over a period of 5 years or more. Although they were very good and I had absolutely no issues with them in that time.
I've since switched to kamakuras, purely as I couldn't get any of jp wide gapes in 6 at the time and never swapped back. The new ZR hook coating is exceptional, have used it this season, no need for kamacote anymore, and it was just as effective on the jp hooks when I gave a friend a spare bottle to try.
I've found most hooks to be ok out the packet these days, on the rare occasion I use them I just give some normal wide gape x's a brush with a Gardner hook doctor, doesn't take any metal off, just the coating, gives them a bit more bite. not quiet like a hand sharpened or a Kamakura but particularly on cray lakes the point won't dull or burr over in half an hour.

I found that with the JP early hooks, and especially on a couple of waters I used to fish. I haven't really experienced it lately, although I do keep one of the Jag hook pens in my bag. I have however never needed to use it, and have avoided doing so as I can't quite be sure it doesn't taint, but that's a separate conversation 😂

Anyone any idea why corrosion of the exposed metal is only really an issue in warmer water? During late autumn until early spring the problem isn't anywhere near as prevalent, if at all.

Don't know of it's been mentioned but just pick up some 'Zero Rust' treatment Joe Morgan has the link to this product on his socials. I know a few lads who are using it and have confirmed it totally removes rusting unlike the well marketed vasiline.

Got two hooks just testing it myself one without one with day three and the one with looks like new the one without already looks horrible

I can vouch for it. Darren lives local to me and I do always like to support and use small companies where I can. I bought and used it for a while, have never wound a hook back in rusted at all, was actually quiet surprised as I've bought things in the past of a similar nature and it all turned out to be a gimmick. Another plus point of using it is you can still use pva foam and not worry about the coating being cleaned off like the kamacote would.
