Why does it seem that there is some unwritten rule that in 95% of pictures taken in Carp fishing, the captor is looking at one end of the Carp with a serious face and not smiling at the camera?
Why don't people look at the camera and smile?
If an athlete has a picture of them holding an Olympic gold medal, they are not gazing at the medal they are looking at the camera smiling. Notwithstanding the corny biting the medal shot, but they are still looking at the camera.
If a gardener wins a biggest marrow competition, they are pictured holding said vegetable, smiling at the camera not looking longingly at it
If a footballer wins the FA Cup they are holding the trophy aloft looking and beaming at the camera.
And when you look at pics of people holding most other species, they are inevitably looking at the camera.

it harks back to the 70s when we all stuck a finger in the gob of the fish to keep it still lol
and gaze lovingly down at the fish
to me its total cobblers FFS you would still study the fish no matter where or what expression you were pulling ???
when I catch a goodun I am as happy as a pig in shyte and show it

its not their fault they are basically sheep just following the herd same with the tackle and set ups
Im a 60s carp angler my importance is fook what it looks like its how well it works
today its the fashion sheep and total commercialism and them making money out of you
I often wonder if someone somewhere said blimey these Stainless steel rods are getting expensive I got an idea lets cut them in half convince them its pukka and crafty and carpy can you think of any more words too make think they need em low ?
and we can sell them to the dopey sods for a little bit more money and more than half our production costs win win
truth is you can use long sticks point your rods down even tips under water and grab the rod faster as you dont have to bend over to get it

haha this is so funny. see this all the time don't ya. Like you say whats wrong with smiling at the camera. I genuinely think most anglers do it because they its trendy to do so and looks "carpy" to stare longingly and romantically at the carps head or tale. Funny old game aint it haha.
I have never seen a trophy pic of Bill Cottam smiling, and when you think he's had some of the most iconic carp of all time (the Scar fish from Lukes along with the Linear and the Brown fish, plus the 100lb common from Le Sausage - or whatever it's called) in his arms you'd think he would crack a little lift of the lip!
This should be what we all aspire to, PTSD sufferers on a free week at Le Queroy. These guys know misery and despair like old friends, yet a carp in their arms lights up their faces for all to see.

Ritchie is a long time mate
since we met donkeys years ago at Longfield when he started there and he was influenced of pictures like Jack and Len`s ( Ritchie was the original tackle tart even back then ) and yes he did used to say its all about the fish lots of times but its his opinion
and I just dont see it the guy holding it could have clown paint on it wont stop you looking at the fish will it ? he could look anywhere it truly will not influence you looking at the fish any more or less ? surely ???

To be honest my pictures rarely see the light of day, so it doesn't fuss me in the slightest what people think when they do see them. But on a personal note I really don't care what anyone chooses to do. 9 times out of 10 when I'm in the scroll hole looking at things I never ever pay attention to the captor at all, couldn't care less. Even when I screen shot fish I like the look of to get info on I cut the angler out 😂

Most of my shots are self takes and being a dour Yorkshireman I'm not naturally at ease smiling hence even target fish or something special are mostly glum looking ,but some of the shots you see people post I just laugh at. But there again all my shots hardly ever see the light of day anyways. We did as a group of mates in our teens, go through a spell of taking shots with our tongues out for some strange reason wtf that was about I'm not too sure..
As for the brolly pole incident.... once happened to me way back in the 90's, couldn't get the Gardner screw in pole to bite, bright idea, so I sat on the T bar, or so I thought, it had slipped out.. straight through my Nash thermal suit, jeans and headed for my jacksie!!!! 🙄😂😂 I've never been the same sweetie 😉

I personally think it comes from the pre digital camera era, back in the day (only the 90's) we would have to go to the chemists to get our photos developed. you wouldn't use a whole film for one fish so if you had a standard pose less chance of pulling a stupid face. old habits i guess
