Have three Shimano Super Baitrunner 10000 XTE which are showing their age. Any recommendations on replacements, they live on Free Spirit S class 2 3/4lb rods.

The XTE 10,000 super baitrunner is a lovely reel, i have them on my 10ft 2.5lb tfg rods for my small water set up.
Get them serviced and they will outlive us all

Unfortunately i had them serviced two years ago, full strip down and rebuild. They did need parts but were unavailable so they work but are worn. You are right they are great reels like the Aero 4000gt i had before them.
As i don't fish as much as years ago replacing them with the latest version if off the cards. Not much long range fishing with my rods or the lakes i fish.
So looking for a compact reel with good line lay, could consider losing the baitrunner if the clutch was smooth and easy to operate. Don't like these big reels pushed by the tackle trade where they are just not needed, also i run with 0.40 line so a capacity the same as the XTE 10000 would be nice.

The X aero as mentioned in post #2 is a very nice reel but it has a shallower skirt and could possibly be a problem with line getting under the spool.
I still use shimano aero gt 6010 reels on my barbel rods, great reels and plenty about.

Yep the 6010 was a great reel, not sure about buying secondhand. May end up with what i already have.
I have some Okuma reels on some 1 3/4lb rods i use at a runs water, they have been really reliable considering their price. Has opened my eyes to other reels apart from Shimano.

If you can find a set of XTR RA Super Baitrunne from anywhere grab them with both hands. They are the last and best of the Super Baitrunner range and are superb .... I have also had X-Aero's but the XTR RA's are a nicer reel. To be honest nothing beats them that is available at the moment
a shame that shimano don't support their reels beyond 5 years.

Have a look at the latest Mitchel bait runners, (if you don't want to pay big bucks) 3 different sizes, my friend got one for hes marker rod, and was so impressed he now uses them on hes fishing rods.

The Aero concept reels are all flawed - despite the line guards, it still gets behind the spools. Not just the baitrunners, same issue with their 4000 Aero spinning reels. Also, the bail arms are very easy to bend/damage. I had them for a while, just couldn't live with the issues and sold them on. The sweet spot was the XTEA super baitrunner, after that, the top end versions have been a disappointment. This is why good condition XTEA's fetch such good money used. Buying new now, well in my opinion you're better off taking the non Aero baitrunner, which are still decent. The best baitrunner Shimano currently sell is by a country mile, the D series; the spool sizes don't lend themselves too well to fishing at any distance though. I have three 8000D's that I use for carp fishing, that's the EU models with the smaller handle grips - they are absolutely excellent - super smooth, the front drag is flawless and they have a baitrunner you can hear. They look damn cool too, with their all black body and gold spools. I use those for margin to mid range, say up to 60/70 yards. Anything over that, I switch to my Castzm QDs or my Basia SCW's. Always surprises me that I am yet to see anyone using the D series for carp... such good reels.

What about the mini long cast bait runner the spool is actually pretty small and yet the reel is nice.

Medium longcasts. A good shout.
A little bit bigger than the XTE but a lovely reel.
I have one on my marker rod and id happily have them as my main carp reels.

The 4000D is an excellent bit of kit, if you have deep pockets and happen to travel abroad a 4000 Thuunus is brilliant - they're not supplied to UK dealers and post brexit the priciest have gone north considerably if buying from europe.
The XTEA baitrunner in 5000 size is the best of the rear drag days IMO. flawless.
What about the first gen baby big pit medium baitrunner - as an answer to the original question.

The ultegra xtb 5500 were excellent, i had a set and they were a thing of beauty.
I have seen most of the later models but havent really used them so couldnt comment on them.

I fell for the hype when the Ultegra 5500 XTB's mini pits were first released, and at one stage had 9 of them (loved the size and was only mini pit available from anybody at the time), but in the end I thought they were very over rated ... The baitunner spool was a gimmick and a redundant feature, the handles flopped all over the place and the drag clicker on ALL of them packed up (even after sending 3 away to Felindre, the fix was temporary) ..... I even changed a set for XTC's when they came out thinking they would be an improvement .... and they were worse lol ..... The quality of Shimano mini pits are poor in my experience and just not in the same league as Super Baitrunners .... Fortunately nowadays other manufacturers have caught up by offering better versions

I wouldnt buy any 5500 sized Shimano or variant of these models personally .... If you want baitrunner that is still available new I would go for Shimano X-Aero Baitrunners myself (i had no issues at all when i had a set) or look at something from Daiwa .... Ive never had a problem with Daiwa reels .... although i dont currently own a set of Daiwa's at the moment, i would be lloking at Emblem BR or Castizm BR.

I've got a set of medium big pit bait runners ci4 model (forget the full title) but they are great, love the bait runner just like the old 8000/10000 GTE reels. Plenty of line capacity and light weight to balance on your rods 👍

I've been looking around for some Superbaitrunners and have found some on EBay. The reel boxes say XTE Superbaitrunner Aero. So reading all the post below are these not the same as the ones you guys are recommending?

I have XTE reels on my 10ft rods, they are an older top end baitrunner reel but not over large.

I would concur with that. I've had most of the Baitrunner guises through the years and used them up until recently. Bought 2 5500 ci4 baitrunners to use on my Pike rods and for when I do a little carp fishing.
Definitely not in the same league build quality wise.Still don't know what Shimano were thinking when designing that handle,must of been a Friday afternoon job.

The floppy handle when folded is a joke, same on my medium baitrunner.
I have to use one of my daughters hair bobbles, surely shimano can do better...
The old original longcasts had a squared section that would tighten down and keep the handle folded, so why not keep this design
