I made a comment on another thread, but instead of sidetracking the posters thread, I thought I'd start a thread of its own.
I've currently got both a Grey's XT and XSM rods which I don't like and I've put an order in for a custom Trebuchet spod rod. Some seem to be of the opinion that they're a beast to use? Seeing as I've nowhere to try this rod out I've got to take a punt on it. I've got Trebuchet Lites which one of my friends said was an insane rod. I really like the lites; they really are a great rod for what I need them for and don't find them insane at all, quite the opposite in fact.

I didnt get on with the treb spod rod. Tried the 12ft and 13ft and found it really hard work. The aviator spod is a fantastic spod rod tbough
I could cast a 5oz lead 20 yards further with my treb lites than i could with the spod rod, i can cast the aviator spod 25 yds further than my treb lites

I completely agree with this.
I have Treb Lites fantastic rods. I bought a treb spod and I was not able to reach my maximum fishing rod range, its just so difficult to compress. I was exactly the same , about 25yards short.
I have been contemplating selling it the last couple of days actually and getting the Aviator spod instead.

It's a 5.75tc rod designed to cast big spods that may weigh 8/10oz which it can do but for most will be physically exhausting. Try one with an 8oz lead and see how long it takes casting at your max before your knackered.

That's like any spodding. If you're baiting up with a lot at range it's knackering, the weight of reel and blank is going to add to that exhaustion.
Did you read that article? None of them mentioned anything about like what the posters on here have with a blind test to boot. Maybe those testers are extremely well built guys that are used to smashing spods at mega ranges?

Look what they were comparing, hardly like for like, they even had a 10ft scope in the mix. How many casts did they have and what range were they hitting? Like the guys below have said they preferred the aviator spod and could cast it further, for me I've not used it but I do know I can cast a large spomb with the torrix spod rod as far as I can cast a baited rig with treb lites.

They were going from 50yrd, 75 and then to 100yds. They had 21 rods that they were testing. I'd guess that the ones featured were their faves or something to do with the mag.
How far can you cast Treb lites - I'm not seeing who can cast the furthest as that's just egotistical nonsense. A genuine ask.

I love my Treb lites too, I've actually ended up with 4. Has anyone used them for spodding with, say a medium Spomb/Spider spod?
I've had the treb spod a few months and really like it. I tend to have a 12ft softer spod rod in the van but generally opt for the Trebuchet even for short and medium work. This could be relevant or not but I've been carrying an injury to my right elbow that I'm struggling to shake off, this has made me use my left arm pulling much more than I use to. Doing this with the 13 footer makes using at shorter distances easy. I know this is different to the other replies but as said, I really like this rod and getting on fine. :-)

The XSM is very similar to the treb spod. Quite heavy and difficult to compress. Hard work.

I can get the XSM to compress ok. Only took a short while to get used to the weight, seems okay now. By the time I've sent off for the XSM to be rebuilt with decent triple legged eyes (think the action would suffer as it's not that great now) I'd be better off just getting a new rod, which by all accounts is a better all round rod.
The Shimano Intensity spod has interested me, unfortunately they've not made a 13ft version, and who knows when that'll be out.

Nothing wrong with the rod or using at shorter distances, we are talking about mega long range, it just can't hit the same distances as the treb lite fishing rods unless you compress it hard which is tough work.

My distance won't be relevant to most as I only fish without any form of leader and only fish level line with 0.37 mono. Of course this doesn't make any difference for spoding as I use braid with a heavy leader and while the treb spod would do the distance I wanted it was easier with the torrix spod. Also bear in mind I can't cast as far as I used to as at 62 I just don't have the strength or coordination I had 20 years ago.

only asked because i found a new 12ft torrix spod the other day in the fishing room and thought id give it a go
we both been using the c2d spod
he's spombing 50 wraps like an animal and im struggling to his 40 lol
was gonna swap to the torrix but looks so fragile in comparison lol

My spombing skills are crap but I find the torrix easy,not going to hit 40 wraps with it though and that's more than most that I see can do.

I've been trying loads of rods from mates for a couple of years and want to try the tx9 intensity 13ft rods and the spod but don't know anyone with them and shops are out of stock. Had always been an infinity xld 3.5tc for casting and tried the latest df x45 in 13ft which I liked but didn't think they cast any further than the original xld's but maybe me getting older. Tried the infinity slr and had to used tapered leaders as level line kept cracking off, from what I've tried the treb lite is best for me. Need to try a 12ft treb spod and aviator spod.

From what I've seen, the Treb spod is only in 13ft; maybe you can get them in 12ft???
Have you tried starting slow and finishing quick in the cast not using a leader? Depending on the line diameter you mention, you should be good for around 150yds believe it or not.

Poooo, see the aviator spod is available in 12ft,12ft6inch and 13ft. Maybe a custom built version with lighter weight titanium k guides would be a good option as the factory builds are 50mm to 16mm tip kigan.

Same thing with rods, always best to get them made for you as you can get the correct placement of the reel handle to suit your arm length unlike something off the shelf.

I've had plenty of rods built and to be honest reel placement isn't a big deal for me. I must have ‘normal' sized arms!
