I am looking to target carp on my local canal. However, I need some advice regarding rods.
These rods will only be used on the canal, so they won't need to suit another situation. Short rods make sense to me, the tow paths can be narrow and most casts will be dropping a bait into the margins or an underarm chuck.
I did consider a 9ft rod, however I have also thought about going right down to 6ft. For this kind of fishing, what would you go for?
Wychwood and Sonik do 9 and 6ft rods, which both get decent reviews. So, If anyone has any opinions on them, that would be great.

I've got the 6ft Wychwood Extricator. I love it. Had some nice fish on it and it has some real backbone. I'll be using mine on the canal next spring. I'd be very tempted to get another for that kind of work.

I have some shimano 4 peice tribals. Pack away amaller than scopes. Ideal cut rods.

I use sonik xtractors in 6ft for canal my mate has the 6ft greys look good 6ft are good as you can have rods straight out they don't overhang so boats don't hit them

12ft for me, where I fish (Albert Canal) a 6/9 / 10ft will be fun if you have to throw in 7.0 oz lead there.
But also on smaller canals with less water flow i use 12ft, never had any problem with it

How are the Xtractors? I did think such short rods might be like broom handles.

I have the 10ft 3.5 Extractors and love them great to play fish on 👍

I haven't had fish on them so don't know but to me they just feel like a 3llb tc rod pack down to 29 inch and cheep £48 per rod

I've just started using the sonik xtractor recon 8ft 2.5lb tc rods and find them great they pack down to 30 inches they also do them in heavier test curve if you are want to cast big heavy pva bags they also do a xtractor recon landing net that packs down the same size to match that straps to the rod sleeve

As carpy said I agree the 8ft reason 2.5 might be a better all round rod

I use 6ft Scope snides in 3lb, really like the rod, wondered if they would be like broom handles when I first got them but enjoyable playing a fish on them still too

I use ESP Stalkers in 9ft 2.75 TC and find them great for Canal and small pond fishing, very responsive in the cast with leads up to 2.5oz and play fish a dream.
They do cope with heavier leads however, I do not feel the need to use them.

Whilst shorter high test curve rods have the stopping power - I guess the only downside is more likely to inflict mouth damage ?
