First set of ‘big pit' reels Ultegra XTD 14000 or Okuma T-Rex 7000. Leaning towards the T-Rex, haven't been able to hold both in hand to directly compare. Need your help please. Have Shimano TX4 rods 3.5Ib t.c. Target fishing 80 - 140 yards.

I'd go trex based on build quality and value for money but then I buy tackle to hopefully last me years rather than to sell on in a couple of years

My research into medium, big pit reels - based on looks and budget. Do want to keep for 10 yrs plus, not resell on after number of monthsI'm not solely a tackle tart, but fashion marketing tends to pull me in if in my budget - £150 max. Use Shimano old grey 10,000 baitrunners. Had them for yonks. Just want to fish at distance without too much effort. Open to other suggestions.

No problem, If your considering the xtd's I'd seriously take a look at the Penn affinity 2 carbon customs or the newer affinity 3,they are such solid reels for the money much better build quality than the shimano in my opinion but then I'd even say the okuma's are better quality lol

Looks a nice reel. Reviewed the carpology vid review. Pushing my budget. I guess quality costs. Will try to find at my local AD to get hands on.

As Ian said even the standard affinity 2's are better than the xtd's, I managed to pick up a brand new set of 3 for 220 last year on ebay.

Both very good jeff, I preferred the drag dial on the mk2, no difference in how it worked but the shape is better for me on the second version. Other than that I couldn't seperate them really.

Thanks IP and Weaver. I did look at these previously and for no reason, dropped off the list. I'm asking the Miss to send off to Santa for a set of the AF II 7000 LC CC. The LC Blacks II and new III have too much white text and I think the weight and drag feature are worth the extra cash on the CCs. The drag/spool face-on, looks wise compares to the Basia Customs. Best looking reels in my view, but can't justify the price to purchase.

14000XTDs... Been using mine for about 2 years. I'm not gentle on my gear, e,g. made up rods are transported in a jonboat to the spot. Do need the sili washers ... only real negative is handles, need to loosen to close them..

Id take the Okuma all day long in this choice. The XTD is the cheaper cousin of the rest of the Ultegra range and feels it too me.
Okuma, whilst perceived as cheap, open one up and see the contrast of engineering. The T-Rex is a great reel, solid and will serve you well for year. Same for the Okuma 8K, a seriously good reel often ignored purely based on the name of company.
Daiwa & Shimano have dominated the market for years in the UK but when you actually compare Penn & Okuma against them, technically they both easily out engineer the Daiwa & Shimano offerings and for significantly less investment.
Ive sold my Shimanos for Okuma and haven't ever regretted it, quite the opposite.
If you wanna talk, best engineered, best reels in the World, then Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Stella and the Okuma Makira all have there positives. Also, Okuma is one of the biggest reel manufacturers in the world so they aint no tinpot, fly by night product.

absolute rubbish try using these reels for sea fishing where they come under extreme load all but the shimmano will be goosed in no time.Been there worn the teashirt time and time again.People talk absolute crap on here about reels.

Esox, id have to argue that with you IMHO. Go into any Bass pro shop in America and ask the guys behind the counter, which would they choose too spend the own money on and a huge % would state Penn and Okuma for all but the biggest of game fish.
Were talking carp reels and both the Penn and the Okuma are easily as well engineered to withstand all UK fishing.
Id certainly take both Penn and Okuma too the beach over a daiwa carp reel. Shimano, only there better, higher end models but still, I cant see how youd justify your statement. Again, IMO.

An Okuma Maikra fixed spool is easily as capable as any Stella ! But we aren't talking big pelaric fish, were talking carp , catfish and Pike fishing.

I have a okuma spod reel 2x inc 6000 and a small spinning reel I've had an instant reaction to all of them what a great reel for the price very happy with them all
