I'm going to give brazil nuts a try for the next few weeks, I've never tried them before so after any advice using them?
I've only ordered a kilo and a couple of kilos of peanuts.
Was thinking of using half one on the hair and maybe crush a few in a bag with it?

Cook in boiling salted water until they go rubbery. I clean the skin off and use a whole one one a wafter rig. Trim if necessary. A few shavings in a pva mesh bag on the hook. Test each one for bouyancy before casting out as they vary a lot.

Half a brazil fished popped up like a top hat, check buoyancy first as mentioned but if not buoyant enough drill out for a bit of cork, caught me a few carp when the goings been difficult although I find/think they're not a quick bite tactic, probably 24/48 hrs they come into their own for me picking up bites, longest I have left one out was 5 days in winter (December) fishing out in France resulted in a 67lb+ common though, rather than fish over shavings of Brazil I prefer to fish them over a small ping pong sized PVA bag of kibbled peanut with a touch of rock salt.

Cheers bud, that was the kind of tactic I was going to try as im going for 3 nights next week, also bought some Redskins peanuts and blanched peanuts,.

One of the most secret squirrel baits out there Bren. Accounted for numerous brook fish and also some of the bigguns that have allegedly been caught on boilies.
Keep it small mate, tip of the horn with a sliver of fly anglers foam butted up next to it, critically balanced and a real dainty presentation.
Have confidence in it mate, despite it not reeking with smell, believe me that once it's in the water it is pushing out attractor signals like you wouldn't believe.
Tinker with your presentation and get it bang on.
Awesome bait.

I remember the first time I saw someone fish them - he fished half a bait, and crushed the other half and put in a bag.
Couldn't believe how much it flattened the water off with the oils coming out of it.

I always end up eating them.
I fish them over particles. Especially if I see alot of people using tigers.
Just buy a small bag from the supermarket.
I always score the outside of the nut as well.
Plenty of good advise here by previous people.

Sounds awesome like this. Kibbled peanuts at £3 per KG at wilkos. What rig do you use this on? I tend to use the Ronnie and wondered if it would be OK for that. I also wondered how long they stay buoyant?
Final question - do you soak the Brazil nut or the kibbled peanuts? Might just give this a go on my next session, but also promised myself I'd give fake casters a go (over a small bed of real ones) after listening to a talk by Terry Hearn. Maybe I'll do both!

Sorry... Can I just clarify, does everyone cook them first? Just checking you can't use them raw. I saw on another thread that you soak them for 48hrs, then boil for 45 mins. Any advice on other prep tips would be great.

Soak for 24hrs then cook for 30mins. They will go slightly translucent and feel a bit rubbery.

boil, then drill out the centre and insert a cork stick...then shrink wrap length ways and side ways....
I wouldn't soak then in bait liquids, all your doing is ruining an already attractive hookbait. I'm not a fan of making particle etc smelling like boillies.

Thanks for the tips gents, that's great.
Why shrink wrap them? I've got some korda bait wrap which I could use, but just wondering why. Is it because they start breaking down?

the Korda wrap is what I use mate
I wrap mine to save them splitting and the cork popping out.

Ah makes sense, thanks mate. Stupid question, but can you fish a Brazil nut as a pop up, bottom bait or wafter? I'm assuming you can, but want to understand if it best used as one type of set up over the other.
The place I fish is a bit silty with patches of gravel here and there, and a few bits of low lying weed. I tend to cast an empty rig out onto my chosen spot and then I reel it in to see if the hook comes back with any crap attached. If it does, I fish Ronnie rig, but if its nice and clean I go for a bottom rig (combi or blowback)
Assuming I will cast into both areas, would I be OK to use half a Brazil nut on any of those rigs? I wondered if they always always floated (hence the daft questions)

ive only ever fished them as a pop up mate.
I don't see any reason why you wouldn't/couldn't fish them as a bottom bait, but like you, the places ive used them have been rather silty

Use for all three . Brazil's have differing buoyancy so pick the one that suits your rig

Thanks both. Just bought some from Asda (£1.80 for 150g) which I think will be more than enough for my next session. I'm going to prep them the day before so they're nice and fresh and I don't think I'm going to use anything to flavour them as I want the natural oil to do the business.
Thanks again for your help

little tip for you
when fishing with half a brazil on the hook
use a ground bait, slice up a few cooked brazils like garlic slices
and don't forget....you don't need many brazils at all to be successful

Sounds like a good plan, thanks. I was going to do crushed brazils mixed with some crumb boilie in a mesh bag, slid down the hook link to mask the hook and keep it all straight on the cast....but I like the sound of something that has worked well for you so I'll give that a whirl

As a hookbait I just use half a bit straight from the bag. You only have to drill one out to see the amount of oil that oozes out, fish on the bottom over hemp with confidence!

Using a Brazil hookbait tomorrow- uncooked On the hair. I have blitzed half the bag through the blender for a Small stick -
it still has very small bits of nut init, is it okay as I have not cooked or soaked them? Not putting any free offerings out!

Once you have soaked and boiled the Brazil nuts, do you drain the water and store dry...or store in some waters?

Best way to preserve brazils (and tigers) ??
Currently store tigers in the fridge in the gloop in pots and take one in the rucksack and put them back in the fridge afterwards. Seem to last a while but im wondering if this will work the same with brazils.
Have thought about using betalin which I know will work but will it lock the oils in?
In the past have tried using honey but 1. its so messy and 2. once it crystalises its a pain.
Anyone got any tips?

I've always used Brazils mega fresh and find that they seem to work better, note that I said seem to work better, not proven. To my palate Brazils turn foul if not kept fresh.
Tigers are very different. I have used them fresh, ancient, boosted and unboosted and have never, in all honesty been dissatisfied.
Use Brazils very sparingly and boil them fresh. Small pack from the supermarket should be plenty. And don't bother preserving them.

why boil them, if fishing as hookbaits only, whats the advantage of boiling them ? there so oily, straight out the bag and Ive caught well using them. Just curious as to why people boil them and any advantage in doing so

I've always given them a quick boil. I really don't know why and suspect it is not necessary but have always felt that it helps release ‘something' more easily.

easy just Use a PROPER vacuum packer
I have some Brazils that are 4 years old and perfect
I used Brazils fishing in Europe (had fish in Rainbow on a Brazil nut) mainly used them as they are but have also flavoured them with peppermint oil and caught too

Vacuum pack could be solution in small packs of no more than 15/20. Few hookbaits and some to crush/slice as freebies.
Trying the honey route again, with acacia honey which is runnier and according to honey science, takes much longer to crystallise. See how that goes for hookbaits only.

I've been catching a few bream on them, no tench though so it might work! I think it all depends on the feeding situation you create tbh.
Just as an update, brazils in a glass jar and acacia honey have lasted a long while now and no crystallisation. Seems to have worked well. messy when tying up hookbaits though!

Some great advice in this thread. Whoever said about using them fresh, I totally agree. The oil in them goes rancid pretty quick, you can smell it. I've never boiled, use same as everyone else really. The horn trimmed up with a sliver of cork (check buoyancy as varies from nut to nut) then a tiny mesh bag of shavings on the hook. Dangerous single hookbait
