I'm after a cheap tablet to use when I'm on long winter nights I've got an iPad but I just want something cheap as it's bound to get knocked around a bit, I've just seen the Amazon Fire tablet Is there anyone using one of these and what do you think of them?

Also looked at the fire for my grandkids , but wanted something that's easy to use from Google play so they can download games etc , also Google photos as they like the editing and movie making . So I went for a Samsung Tab A 8inch , 32gb , with slot to take it over 500gb . £130 is a bit more , but I do know people who use fires , and if it does what you want then they work well.

I've been using a fire tablet for quite a while now and its perfectly capable. If you're switching from an iPad to a fire tablet, you're going to notice it reacting slower to opening apps and it wont run as much at once as an iPad.
It plays movies perfectly fine, tethers to a mobile perfectly fine. The 7 or 8 inch model is 720p so might be a downgrade from your iPad, however the 10inch model is 1080p if you wanted 1080p in particular, 720p will still play movies and such in HD, but its not as clear as 1080P obviously.
Battery wise, it will easily do 2 full length movies. It has an SD card slot if you store programs on SD cards to watch.
Its a solid 6.5-7 /10 option as tablets go for just browsing internet / movies / small games on the bank to pass the night, but you will find it slower and not as crisp as an iPad.

ive had 2 for the wife, and a galaxt tab 1 10.1 for me, and there all great tabs for little money, the amazon tab can be made stock with google play and a skin

My mum has a amazon fire tablet and its so hooked up to amazon and their preferred browsers it restricts your access to google. They are horrible.

I'll second that. Stay well clear. Absolute rubbish that is constantly plugged into the charger.

I have to disagree with you there..... ive got a kindle fire HD and find its perfect for fishing...i download stuff from both amazon and Netflix to watch on then bank .... I'd get at least 4-5 hrs from a single charge and if you turn off WiFi and Bluetooth the battery will last longer.....
I use an iPad in the house etc. I also like the kindle cos i like to read a lot as well when fishing...
I'm personally not fussed if I don't get full HD with surround sound when fishing....
The only down side ive found Is the screen can be a little difficult to view on a bright sunny day....

I've just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 and it ticks all my boxes for watching movies on the bank - large screen, 14 hrs life and takes SD cards up to 512GB. Paid £139 from Currys.
