Hi looking for help / advise
After nearly 10 years I finally have 100 posts so feel ok about asking the question
Looking to sell 3 sets of rods and looking at eBay as one of the optionS
What does it cost me to sell a set of rods.
If they sell for 600 how much do I actually get - how much does eBay / pay pal take
I would like to know so I can offer them for cash at a competitive price

10 % Ebay and 3 % PayPal but every month they do a £1 listing so better waiting for one to come up then you only pay PayPal + £1

Exactly this
The £1 listing offer is great and can save you loads but the item must sell in its first listing period. If you put stuff on as 'buy it now' you can set a price (and accept offers to your discretion) which gives you a month on your 1st listing time limit. After that you're back to standard rates.

If decide to sell on ebay I would not post if you can help it. I am seeing it more and more where the buyers are putting in claims and winning

Dont think that is quite right, the £1 listing fee is just that, the cost to list, you will still have to pay the 10% final fee, at £600 you will pay 13%.
Also they charge the 10% on postage.

If they pay by paypal and collect you have no proof to say they collected and they can still claim against you.
Not fishing by I listed something as cash on collection and the listing was pulled and I got a warning from ebay, you must offer Paypal as an option.
Getting it sent with a fully trackable, signed for service is the safest IMO. Advertise it that way and hopefully it will put off the scammers?

I would add to that make sure you insure high value items and be prepared if it goes missing to have to claim the money back yourself and being out of pocket to Paypal in the interim.

In terms of disputes the buyer will win 99 percent of the time.

Just come unstuck very recently selling some fishing gear. Without going into detail, buyer demanded a refund into his bank account that day. Unfortunately he picked the item up from my home so I got the ' I know where you live routine' I paid him the money. Too much hassle now I'm in my 60's. Won't be selling on ebay anymore.

I gave up on ebay a while back..........these days its a scammers paradise and the fees are a joke. last couple of years ive only put stuff on facebook. free to list and no fees. everything I've put on there has sold and ive had no problems at all.

I often wonder if it's what you're selling that attracts the scammers, maybe fishing gear is something that attracts them?
i sell the odd thing or 2 on ebay and always wait for the £1 final selling fee and if possible cash on collection otherwise you have to stump the paypal fee

I have used eBay for years to buy things over 700 items all with 100% feedback but only ever sold 1 item for myself - sold my uncles bike last year for him
eBay allows so many people to see what your selling and gives the chance of getting the best price but having read all the posts I'm more wary of it now than ever

Yes. One came thru. I'm using it currently.
One thing to say. You will prob sell your rods for way more than you expect. It's a sellers market at the moment. Just make sure you send everything fully track able and insured (but add that cost into postage price) in eBay. Good luck

Maybe so, I'll keep my eye out I wish they'd give a little more notice, like on a Mon for the following weekend, more time to find stuff and photo it, research p&p etc.

That's my point 9 times out of 10 most disputes opened by the buyer are found in their favour. I have seen it loads with lego sets you send a brand new set out buyer takes the mini figures out somd of which are worth loads and then say they we're not in the box.

For collection, I'm pretty sure the person collecting now gets a unique collection code that they have to give to the seller when collecting, the seller then enters this code into the ebay app, this confirms that the buyer has collected the item.

sold over 300 items of ebay over the last 10 years from carp gear to prams and snowboards.
I would say all but one fishing gear buyer very genuine, polite and friendly.
I get buyers to collect the stuff rather than post, then I can make sure they are genuine.
On quite a few ebay sales I have managed to avoid fees by selling directly, you have to be careful not to get caught but it can be done quite easily. Most buyers are OK with the arrangement if they think they are getting a good deal.

However I think it's a lot easier for scammers to claim through Paypal now.

There are idiots out there with everything internet related. However, common sense should always prevail and in my experience , the good E-Bayers far outweigh the bad ones.
