I know there was a load of thefts happening around the Cotswold waterpark and oxford area at some point a few years a go, is this still happening?
It seemed like a weekly occurrence at one point but i'm hoping things have improved since.

Thats why I always have a machete in my armoury when fishing..
But obviously its used for chopping back branches etc

Let's be honest if 5 blokes turn up in your swim you can wave a machete as much as you like, they'll still take your gear and leave you half dead

My bivvy is now big enough that I can fit all my gear, including barrow and rod holdall, comfortably in the bivvy at night.
Saying that I put my bait bucket in a swim to reserve the swim last year and by the time I got back with my gear it had gone!

I think about this quite a lot, like what would i do.
If you think about it, you're gonna get one maybe 2 good swings before they take the weapon off of you and fill you in. All it takes is for of them to come behind you and hit you while you're swinging it and it's game over lol.
Say you do win, you cut them all up with a machete. Then what? You're going straight to prison. Defending tackle or not you've just used a weapon in a public place.
It's not worth the trouble, gear can be replaced, your time in prison or your life can't be.

Silly comment to make though saying you have a machete. Personally I dont think many of us know what we would do, I'm a very placid person who has only ever lost it fully 3 or 4 times in my life, but if the fuse is ignited I'd have a go regardless of size or numbers.I hope I would be able to notice something, tattoo vehicle accent just something.

It's a silly comment because your admitting carrying an illegal weapon. If you wanna have a go at 5 blokes nicking your gear go for it, they may not just smash you up they may stab you. Or club you round the head and that's you dead. I'm very hot headed but based on some of the robberies that happened at my local I would just let em take it. At my local they operated in a group of three, two to do the nicking one lurking at the side with a pipe, someone got assaulted pretty badly when he went to get out of the bivvy it's just not worth it mate

In a house there aren't the blindspots like getting out of a bivvy in a crouched position your immediately at a disadvantage in my house it would be very hard for someone to hide to surprise me

A machete is a bit much, but would you REALLY go to prison for protecting yourself against a thief with an every day item that we use whilst angling?
I think since the mobile chavvy got stabbed with a screwdriver in Hither Green a few years ago, the justice system is starting to take note of the fight or flight mechanism we all have. It's human nature. You either stand there shaking like a leaf, you run, or you start swinging. That is biology.
I would never apologise for protecting myself, my family or my property. In reality? My kids faces would be in the back of my mind, and I'd want to make it back home to see them.

A machete can easily chop someone's arm off, add in someone who doesn't know what they are doing and it's a recipe for a manslaughter charge, defending yourself at home with deadly force is a big enough grey area let alone when out in public

Truth is none of us know how we would react until it actually happened and hopefully none of us ever have to experience it. It's all well and good saying that you would have a swing or just let them take it but adrenaline and fear can make you behave completely differently to how you think you will....

I don't think you'd stand much of a chance of blagging a machete as a bit of fishing kit - don't know of anyone trekking through a rainforest to their swim? So would have thought brandishing one would be an instant offensive weapon in public charge before you start swinging it in anger.
Also a pretty pants weapon in close quarters fight in the dark, yhe only thing it would have going for it is the fear factor. If there were more than one attackers you'd be more likely to be the one being hacked with it.

I'd love to say I'd charge out protect my gear for all it's worth, be interesting to see if the 7 years of wing chun and MMA I used to do is still in there.
Unfortunately in reality I've got 2 little girls who adore me and would be destroyed if I wasn't there. So reality is I would turn the other way pretend to be asleep and hope they don't set a bite alarm off. Then hope that the extra money I pay on my contents insurance for fishing gear out the house is worth it. There's more valuable things in life than fishing gear.

Never been put in the position thankfully. The only thing to take from this post is get tackle insurance. If push comes to shove you could let 5 blokes take your gear and have peace of mind you ain't got to save up for years to get your money back. I've been done twice on the bank,1st time it happened was my own fault, the weather was terrible, strong winds and driving rain into my bivvy so zipped the door down..around an hour later I had 3 bleeps of the buzzers all at same time.i just put it down to the weather and went back to kip..in the morning unzipped the door to not see 3 Richie Mac rods and 3 ss3000s obviously the 3 bleeps I had was them cutting the lines..2nd time I got done, i was in my bag asleep when one bloke sat on me while the other cut my lines and legged it with my rods and reels..not much I could do about that, the bloke weighed a ton..by the time he had got up and legged it with his mate they was over the fence before I got out the bag....I just use **** get nowadays,no one would nick it..
