Guys, I'm fishing my local water in a closed off swim at present, I fished last weekend 3 fish no losses. and no one as fished it since..everything is the same, same rigs, all be it new hooks etc, same bait, same spots bank sticks are even in the same holes!!! and this morning I had a screaming take at 6 ish fishing locked up, tip bent around to spot slightly to the right at 60 yards, lifted into it and nothing there... re rigged back out again and 3 hours later same again.... self same rod same spot.... fish trailing line maybe? I did have a very similar experience last year once again same spot etc.. only thing I noticed was the line say 4 foot above the tubing was crinkled/ pig tailed but not damaged as such.
Any suggestions as to what may be happening? Or do I just put it down to bad luck/just one of those things?

More than likely, it floods on a regular basis from a river next door, also mid twenty pike and two or three catfish up to 70 lbs.
Would an eel give such a savage take though? tips right around and almost pulling rod from rests etc

possibly a fish trailing a rig and lead - the lead hanging under the fish, possibly bouncing along the lakebed - then is hooking up on your line enough to give you a screamer but is coming free under pressure when you pull into it. Could also explain the line damage

I've seen line similar when lines cross when playing fish etc, pike is a possibility though as I've heard of similar occurrences just never as savage as the ones I've had

agreed - and they are buggers for heading for those narrow gaps between rocks which can cause your line to get damaged obvs.

Preds smashing shoals of silvers and picking up your line in their jaws in the process.
Pike will quite often cut the line, cats not so much, but both will leave a "crinkle" if they don't.
Same rod same spot says line lay to me.
Pin your line down as much as you can but you can't eliminate it completely, it happens unfortunately.

Thanks for all the replies very interesting thoughts... eels? I've only ever caught a few in the dim and distant past and don't recall the bites, all on carp gear btw. The spot is a “far margin” spot in about 7 foot of water, line lay is a problem as the water between the near and far margin is 19 foot, and the spot is fairly close to snags so backleads and slacklines are out.. sounds like it probably is pike and just one of those things I'll have to get used to.. cheers all Hadrian

I'm still fishing at the moment, I saw something at the back of my spot late Friday evening, thought maybe a bream show, then 2 hours later the rod melted off and after playing a fish throug a snag for 45 minutes I was cutoff. Then yesterday evening after unfortunately loosing another couple of fish' first caught in snags on lost tackle requiring a trip out in the boat and the second a hookpull at the net, I saw a show that lead me to believe a rather large catfish was in the swim, did some work around the lake rods back out at sunset, and once again a blistering take this time hooking and successful landing a horrible, huge catfish with 2 of my hooklengths in its huge mouth, bottomed the 60lb Ruebens and I'd say 7-8 foot long using retainer floats as a rough guide. So after all that maybe it's all been a catfish all along.. Thanks for a lot you're replies once again H
