I recently purchased the second edition to complete the trio. I sourced mine from eBay but at the same time saw that there was a first edition on auction with bids at £90 with several days to go.
My carp gear hasn't seen the light of day in over a year as I returned to fly fishing so can someone tell me why such a high price?
I am almost tempted to sell mine purchase a new lens for my Olympus!

Because they have stopped being made and desirable, same as any other book. Dave lanes first book goes for silly money as does pecks

One went on a tackle forum a while back for £240!
I saw a tatty one go for nearly £100 on ebay.
Ss2 is quite sought after as well, but ss3 less so, in fact I think you can still get copies new.

You can still get SS2 for £25, might be worth buying a copy! I have the other two, but I doubt they will appreciate in value quite the same.

I'm the worlds worst for selling books that go up in value after. So glad a sale on cemex forum years ago fell through for ss1 and 2. Apparently asking for £40 posted for the pair was too much. Still got them in mint condition (along with ss3) might be going on eBay next £1 listing weekend.

I sold mine for £200 plus postage on Amazon. It was in good condition but not mint. I currently have a different carp book on for £499. I have no idea why people want to pay these prices but it's fine with me.

I can't see the attraction in owning them. I've photocopied hard to get books in the past, read them once put them away and maybe get them out once in every other blue moon.
I've not read these journals I assume they are a good read but the main attraction is actually owning them rather than what's in them? If not wouldn't people be happy to read a photocopy?

Depends on your point of view really. If you just want to read an article for the information it contains or a great story, then a photocopy would do the job fine. I've bought pdf back copies of magazines before now when they had recent articles about fishing Redmire in them, as part of the prep for a ‘once in a lifetime' trip there a few years back.
For me the Subsurface journals are something a bit different though; the aesthetics of them being printed on decent paper stock that does the incredible photography justice, the experience of reading print... It's got something more about it that deserves finding a quiet half hour with a brew when you need a fishing fix but can't get out.
I'm waffling, but you get the gist. I wouldn't pay big money for a copy, but I can definitely understand why some people would 👍🏻

Maybe it motivates the odd person to push themselves harder and they end up catching more as a result, but I couldn't disagree that the investment doesn't directly put fish on the bank..
However, if was all about just catching we'd all be fishing puddles for fat stockies; although nowadays I quietly chuckle to myself at people who genuinely think they are ‘cool' within the carp fishing scene (which is like two dwarves arguing about who's tallest - the rest of the world thinks we're all sad and weird anyway), carp fishing does have a heritage worth celebrating and we're often treated to nature at its best, so I can definitely see the attraction of books like this 👍🏻

I must admit I enjoy reading them, but I think you've got a point, I enjoy owning them just as much. I must have 50 plus books, some worth quite a bit by the looks of it too. Might have to be my pension in 30 years.

They have become cult.
All cult items command outrageous prices, just look at ss3000's they go for almost double what a set was worth new now. Same with original terry Hearn rods, and other cult reels

ALot of people reckon that print is dead, for me high quality printed material isnt, i love high quality printed stuff
its not disposable but needs to be done right.
if there is another "sub" i will get one.
other printed works like fallons angler and water log are still about but they are not monthlies and i think this is where print has to change
less frequent&higher quality

I put mine on eBay after reading this thread and it's just sold for £117. There's 2 other auctions closing not long after mine so they might go for even more.
Must admit I had a flick through it again when listing it, and had forgotten just how good some of the articles in there are. I can understand someone paying the sort of money I got, but some of the higher prices seem a bit crazy. Still, if people are happy to pay it... 👍🏻

The one that went for £175 was mine, right result I had absolutely no idea I thought I might get £30, I was just getting rid of all books I'll never read again. I think it was a timing thing to get that price as maybe one hadn't been on there a while. Within a day of ending two more popped up that went for £117 and £83. Wouldn't all go putting them on.
