all I see now is people raffling off their new and used gear on Facebook. Probably started this year, why has this suddenly become a thing and is it legit? Its also sponsored anglers doing it alot.

Loads of raffles on Facebook for years for new gear and cash etc.....I have even won a few time's.....

Easy was to sell I guess....someone may not be able to afford say £400 on say reels but can afford £10/20 on a couple numbers in a raffle. The speed the ones I have seen fill up it's a quick way to sell aswell.
Their us a local page on fb that I'm on and the bloke who runs the page does raffles for all sorts of fishing gear all the time. Started with small bait bundles and has done really well and now does bigger prizes. I have just received a set of 3 new delkims and reciever from a win....put one number on and won...cost me £20 so it's a great idea to sell new and old stuff and is affordable to everyone to enter!

It is legit to a point and also quite a good punt at times, the ones i have seen on facebook are usually £2 a ticket against lottery draw, person organises it takes £118 and offers a prize about £100 so makes a little each time, does a couple of these a day and bet the tax man never gets involved

its a good way to sell I think, Im on a few old school bmx bike fb pages and some of the bikes are worth 1000s if the owner of said bike wanted back what he originally paid for building the bike, after sourcing parts from abroad (add import duty) he would more than likely not be able to sell it without splitting it up..so selling tickets for £20 @ a limited amount per person but an amount to cover what he is happy with, someone at the end of the raffle gets a 1k plus bike for £20 or a little more..

A farmer said I see your horse is not looking very well ? the guy said its going Im going to raffle it £5 a ticket he sold £500 worth but before the draw the horse died the farmer said what are you going to do he said I will pull the winning ticket then when he comes to collect it I will say Im so sorry its just died and give him his £5 back

thats why you never do business with a pikey.

There are raffles for about everything you could image, another hobby of mine has probably 20+ different raffles running per day by loads of different people.

Unfortunately whilst most people are honest a few weeks ago a few lads got caught out. A small group of 16/17/18 year old lads were running raffles on facebook and it seems that they were selling tickets to 'fake' facebook profiles. So probably ones they or their mates had created therefore never actually loosing the item they were raffling but collecting the whole kitty

that is why you should only enter a raffle on a properly moderated fb page. I've entered ones being held in the usa, never won but if I did it would all be kosher. someone cant just join the page then set up a raffle..

One of my local waters has set up a page to do one. The prizes and money made are very close to rrps but seems a good way to keep them trickling money in and also giving people a chance to own some serious gear for relatively little outlay. They gave away a 700 quid seat box yesterday, not my ball but think it was for about 12 quid a ticket. At least I know them to be reputable and where they are.

Personally I thought Rise of The Foot Soldier was a much better film than Rise of The Carp Raffles 👍

Finchy at Bankside has held a couple recently basically enough to make the RRP of the product at about 6 or 7 quid a punt, tackle shops not being open for walk in trade atm keeps a bit of publicity for them out there whilst selling a little bit as well.

No, not legitimate. It's classed as gambling and you need a licence. Also against FB rules so if it's reported then it will get pulled.

From what I understand reading the gambling commission ruling on raffles is that, unless the proceeds go to a registered charity you need a license to do a raffle, so doing raffles for personal profit is illegal without a license.

There's one on FB at the minute, Carp Gear Giveaways.....they have a set of 3 Technium MGS, £8.99 per ticket, 299 tickets available.....which means the raffle will yield £2,668.01.....a set of 3 Mags would cost circa £1,650, probably a good bit less if you shipped around.

Nice profit!

These raffles are rife on facebook, not just fishing gear. Not sure how they get away with it unless of course they are registered with the gambling commission or are giving proceeds to charity.

I think most of the legit raffles have an option to post the entry for free, usually postal entry is made free of charge to comply with gambling rules etc, that way it becomes a 'competition' and avoids gambling regulations. The current one on facebook with the jag pod can be entered for free by post as opposed to paying the entry fee digitally
edit- infact the carp gear giveaways raffles can be entered for free if you check the t's and c's.

Carp bonus 2 is the one I'm on at the minute, bloke takes anywhere between 15-20% from the ticket sales but donates to charity's etc......

Bivvies rrp of £450 ticket sales of over £1,500
Complete rip off and only 2 winners ... out of hundreds

I didn't even know these raffles were a thing until this thread, I've recently seen 2 different ones on Facebook, carp gear giveaway and carp tackle giveaway.

Must admit I've entered one, apparently I had a 1/125 chance of winning a Trakker barrow for £2 but I've just looked and didn't win I'll probably have another go too

Sure someone is making money out of it but for the chance of a JAG pod or a Pioneer bivvy for a couple of quid it's worth a go innit?

My mate enters lots of those draws, payment by paypal gift type of draws. TBF, he occasionally wins decent prizes although he also occasionally wins aload of tatt. But most of the time he wins nowt. I'm surprised the vat man isnt sniffing about along with the lottery commission,

If your going to play them stay away from the type you mention with massive profits!

Carp bonus 2 for instance ALWAYS give you the choice of listed prizes or cash for every draw. Most take the cash which I have seen Upto £700!!

I have had a look at these in the past and to be honest how much profit these are making is unreal I seen one that was a £1000 voucher and persons profit who does the raffle was £491

I play one on Facebook, used to do it every week but not so much now. Had some good wins from it too

I've done a couple in a small group I'm in just helping out and there's a fair bit of time involved in running one. I don't begrudge anyone trying to earn a few quid. The way I look at it is that I could win a top bivvy or whatever for a few quid

I never allow these. There is no way you can legitimately check it's genuine and as I believe to a certain point I have a responsibility for my members and the content posted into the groups I wouldn't feel good at all if a number of members were proved to have been scammed. We have enough trouble with that as it is.

I have had a go on a couple of small raffles but if the number of tickets and price per ticket exceeds the RRP by more than say 10%, (to cover overheads) i wouldn't go near it, nothing more than profiteering and i am surprised FB allow them to do it.

Lets face it, even at RRP the cost price would be significantly lower so these companies are making a good profit anyway, it is just pure greed thereafter...

Agreed mate after seeing this thread I went and had a look and found a sleeping bag that you can pick up from most tackle shops for £99. The raffle site is selling 200 tickets at 99p each so they are making a 100% profit margin. Just plain wrong

Some online raffles have been reported to have not sent prizes, rigged the winners, not given the money to the charities they state they are giving too, etc etc. There is alot more to it than just how much a ticket costs to the rrp of the product. Thats why the gambling commission regulate these things.
