With so many electric outboards out there in different thrust options it can be confusing which one to go for. I've just got myself 2.5m double skinned fibreglass boat and it's quite heavy, I want a motor with enough power to get this moving across some big lakes in France and some smaller at home loaded with gear.
Any recommendations on what one to go for, been looking at a bison 55lb thrust, I want enough power to move the boat and all the gear with ease but I don't want to go to big it blast through my batteries is there a happy medium, what's other people experiences?

If you are on a big water and the wind gets up you will need all of the 55lb thrust.
You can run it at 1/4 power for most of the time when its calm and you just mooch about, half power for a bit of swim moving etc.

Ok so sounds like the 55 will be about right? Do you think it is ok for river usage too?

Have you you used this make of outboard? It's very similar priced as the bison I was looking at.

I haven't used one of Eric's motors in the link Gerry put up but I know he's been using one for 18 months or more and quite a few of the Rainbow anglers have been using them, Eric does a lot of boat fishing he wouldn't use one if it wasn't up to the job.
I would plump for the 1hp version on a double skin heavy boat as you put it especially if your thinking of going on rivers with it, it's better to be over gunned than under, my bison 55lb thrust on the twin skin solid boats at Rainbow could struggle in a head wind would almost feel like you were stood still, most of the time it would be more than adequate just tickling around on a low speed or halfway for motoring back in but if you get caught in a strong headwind or crosswind it was a struggle making ground or keeping a straight line.
Just my opinion of course

Not a clue Paul sorry, all I know is they recommend 105Ah deep cycle battery as a minimum.

I bought the Bison 55lbs one to use on my 10ft twin skinned boat and it has been excellent.
I've used Mincota outboards in the past and tht Bison seems every bit as good.
I'd buy another without hesitation when needed.

Same here,used it on a French ressie last year and went miles with no issues

Got a bison 55lbs myself and seems to job okay on a 2.7 rib loaded with gear. Stillwater lakes should be fine. Rivers you really need an engine. Hope this helps

1 hp equates to 62 amps at 12 v. If you work on discharging your battery to around 50% then you would get just under an hour out of a 105ah battery.

I dont have either !!!
however I do know Eric who fishes using electric outboards much more than most folk and he would not decide to sell them if they were not one of the best units to use
both are very good motors and your money your choice just like to point out options

Correct me please if I'm wrong but is the bison is 55lb with a lower wattage doesn't that suggest it consumes less power for the same amount of power?

I have absolutely no idea! I have a Bison 55 as well and it seems ok. Ive used it on big waters abroad on a 2.8 inflatable and it handled ok. I've also got an old Diawa 36 which is on its last legs and used a Minn Kota and a Shakespeare one for years. Out of the those, I preferred the Diawa one which seemed much more responsive and picked up quicker. It just didn't have the power I needed.
The Bison just feels a little bit like a Citroen when you've been used to driving an Audi. Slower pick up and less responsive as you move through the ‘gears'. I'm not so sure it'll have the same longevity that the Diawa and Minn Kota gave me. However, it does have the extra power you may need in adverse conditions.
If you're going on a river then invest in a petrol outboard as well - plenty out there that are good and fairly cheap. If I was buying an elec outboard now I would go for a Haswing as per old geezers post...

55lb would be the thrust not the power.
Power is a function of thrust and speed.
To put it another way, both motors may have the same thrust but the lower wattage one will not be as fast all other things being equal.
