What mainline would you suggest to spool up when fishing a silty lake

It depends what you want it to do?? Is the lake big or small?? Is it weedy/snaggy?? Are you casting long distance??

Not sure what you're after but I've got a lot of love for Gardner pro clear in 12 and 15lb. Brilliant line for the money

If its only a small lake id go 15-20lb line so it will sink well as your not needing the distance. Gardner GTHD is good or ESP syncro both good lines. Id use one of those colour is a nice smoke green so blends into everythimg really. If you want a cheaper line korda carpline is good for the money.

20lb Korda touchdown in brown for me on a small silty lake. Sinks well and perfect colour in my opinion.
20lb line ??? its a 2 acre lake ? Jesus Christ are there 60lb fish in there then ?

I'd always rather be over gunned with a mainline than under. I usually use a 15lb hooklength, so that's more likely to go than the mainline. Seems safer to me. Also sinks well if fishing close in and stands up better to snags.
I only use a light bs line if I can't make the distance with something as strong as possible, I can't see your logic in a lighter line for shorter distances?

I would go 20lb if i could especially if fishing near snags or weed and it will sink like a brick keeping the line out off the way, especially if its a tricky little water with big fish in. I would only go lower on lb rating if i need to cast distance. Why use weakline and risk lossing fish when you dont need to.

I've used 12lb line for carp to over 20lb in and around lilies with no problems.
For years it was Daiwa Sensor brown (found it better than clear), then I switched to Gardner Pro in 15lb, which I still use.

I fish a silty old mere with a 15lb line minimum rule .. I used Technium black 15lb for season. The idea was to match the black lake bed. It sinks very well and very durable. Doesn't really cast well though. Some casts are around the 135yrds- 150yrds mark and was a chore with the Technium.
So I went to GLT pro clear in 16lb 0.34mm (breaks at 19lb) and its the best sinking, casts amazingly, behaves itself on the reel and its barely visible on the bottom. So I highly recommend it. If your not launching big distances go with the 18lb for durability reasons. Its a very trouble free line.
