Had the explorer barrow for 2 years. The tyre completely split open and the inner tube bubbled out this week on route to my peg. Normally this is due to over inflation but i felt it was a bit soft if anything. Anyway the rubber on the fox tyres is really thin only a couple of mm and obviously very cheap quality. I spoke to a guy in the next peg as i borrowed his explorer barrow to continue to my peg and he said his explorer tyre did exactly the same thing. He had got a replacement wheel from fox.....
I contacted fox and none in stock until mid august wtf, great service... ... maybe they have so many tyres blow up they have run out of replacements.
Anyway, i have an old Mk 2 barrow that I'd bought a prestige solid rubber replacement tyre and wheel for from prestige a while back. Ive put this on the explorer barrow forks and with the Mk 2 bearings and a couple of extra washers it fits perfect. Job done. Fox can stick their crappy ones.

That's rather spooky I was going start a thread asking if the Mk2 puncture proof wheels fit the fox explorer as my mates has given up the ghost on the valve.Which wheel is it you have as there seems to be two online.One with a metal green center and one with a black plastic center

Mine is the black plastic centre with a smoother wheel with groves running around it (as opposed to tthe one. With a knobbly track on it)

No,that appears to be a new one prestige have brought out, I'd imagine it will still fit, its cheaper than the one i bought a few years ago

I have just fitted that one about half an hour ago and it fits absolutely perfect.I used two spacers that came in the box it fits in the frame does not touch the bag and it's a little bit bigger so seems easier to push.Mine said delivery would be 19th-23rd but it came this morning so very good service too.Very happy indeed

Ive just taken a puncture proof wheel off my explorer - couldn't take the shocks it put through the handles.
got a replacement from fox and a big bottle of tyre slime - no problems now
if anyone with a thumb wants a puncture proof wheel, let me know.

Yeah I have put tyre slime in my fox tyre the one recommended by fox when I emailed them and so did my mate and his tyre has just given up on him.This prestige one with metal inner does not feel too solid but not too spongy either like one I bought from keto plastics.Hopefully it will be just what I have been after.Im tempted try the prestige handles with crossbar next just not sure if they will fit

I had my explorer wheel explode in the back of my van on the way to the lake ! My god it scared the c*** out if me ! I pulled over and couldn't figure out what it was . Then I got to the lake and it hit me . It was my own fault , I over inflated it I think

A solid rubber wheel normally has a greater rolling resistance so it will be harder to push.
Any tyre recovers slower than it deforms when pushed over an uneven surface such as a stone so loses energy in the process so to compensate you would need to push harder.
Pneumatic would be more efficient than a soft spongy rubber so ideally use pneumatic with a puncture sealant. Alternatively you could use a harder rubber tyre which would be easier to push than a soft one but you would lose shock absorption

It rubbed on the bag for one thing and put a hole in it...
Anyway to answer my own question just picked up a B&Q barrow wheel for 11.95 fits perfect and no bag rub

Definite possibility.
That was just the theory on rolling resistance but whether a different tyre material is noticeably harder to push probably depends how soft it is. A bit like using a car with partially deflated tyres, mpg will go down as the tyres take more energy.

I fitted mine and its not possible to screw on the locnuts all the way as the prestige puncture proof wheel is too wide
so I simply put the nuts on loose drilled thru them and put a split pin thru for security and it wheels perfectly very easy and bag does not rub at all ?
I read the reviews (3) on the B&Q wheel they give it one star

The one star is probably one star more than the fox wheel and paper thin tyre would get. Shocking to put that on a great barrow. I know 5 people on my Syndi with fox explorers and all have now had tyres burst or explode.

Can't you just put a new tyre and tube on the wheel? Cheaper and easier than trying to make another wheel fit surely

Guy on eBay sells extensions for the MK4 and MK2 Porter wheels, stops the bag rub and gives more ground clearance. Fitted them to mine and it's much better.
Wheel wise I have a puncture proof porter one on, they're fine on decent ground but awful in mud due to the narrower profile.

I've had a few issues with the standard explorer wheel. The main one being, I seem to need to over inflate past the recommended PSI for it to retain an actual wheel shape! Then it's a pig to push with a heavy load. I linesd tyres and used green slime to stop punctures which worked. Eventually the inner tube just split.
I looked about for a replacement and bought this off Amazon.

My god, it is MILES better. 4 ply instead of the Fox 2 ply, and only needed to inflate to 22 PSI with a 30psi max recommendation. It is solid. As per the other thread, if you want a puncture proof wheel for the Explorer the Screwfix Universal Walsall fits and works great.
One puncture was annoying, after the second that was it for me for inner tubes!

My Transporter just did exactly the same. I replaced mine with a rear wheel from a TriPorter which fits perfectly. ...not sure if the Explorer wheel is the same?
