I use the Nash butt locks for my cork rods. They do seem to grip the rod pretty well.

ive tried many a back rest, most do the job, currently using the ESP version. Superb, cheap as well. Three sizes and they grip extremely well, as do they all really. JAG are good as are the Solar but both are quite expensive.

John Roberts, used them for over 35 years

I use the large cygnet grips, seem very good and grip the rod just right

John Roberts or ESP!

The new Solar back rests are better than the originals, highly recommended.

Nash Butt Locks for me as well.

Another vote for ESP. The cork handle ones lol. They do a specific cork handled butt grip, they are what you want. Large size mini butt grips they are called. If you look on the packet, it says for full duplon/cork handles. These fit both my sets of 'corked' rods perfectly.

I have used the Solar back rests from the original Lockey U type through the adjustable to the P1 range today. Never had any problems with them & suitable for any handle type - especially the adjustable ones so they are held perfectly making them secure but lift out without pulling bankstick or pod from the deck!

My corks are getting a bit tired, meaning that even the ESP rests (which are otherwise excellent) were damaging them when slotting them in. I need to pull my finger out and give them some tlc, but in the meantime getting some of the Nash butt rests has sorted the problem 👍🏻

been looking at Fox power grip rests I have cork on one set and shrink wrap on other set thinking they might take both sizes anyone used them

I got some wide bore shrink tube off EBay and stuck a couple of inches on each butt. Protects the cork and helps the rests grip that bit better.

I'd prefer the cork to weather the same seems to me to be pointless when there are plenty of butt rests that work.

What about the rests some use at rainbow where a bungee cord clips over the top of the butts ?

It doesn't weather the same though does it?! Not in my experience.

There's one area that's constantly in and out of butt rests and this naturally weathers a lot quicker than the rest... Shrink prevents that damage and results in a tighter grip which is a welcome bonus.

If you always have your rods in the rests in the same position then protecting the areas that receive wear is surely a no brainer.

Can't say I've ever noticed it cause an issue when using the John Roberts rests. It's like saying the varnish will wear and I've never noticed that either. If your happy then great.

Fox large rests worked well for me

I like the fox ones, and you can adjust them by warming them in hot water

I had a set of 10' rods made up with the handles having a 1” gap, 2” from the rear of the reel seats, so could use the Solar butt rests quite tight fitting but on the blank instead of on the cork. Also doubles up to stop the rod being dragged forward as the thicker cork section (has blanking plate to protect) acts as a stop & will not pull through the butt rest. Similar to what Shimano have done on their TX Intensity range of rods (their flagship range). Had this done with full Duplon but would also have it done with full cork on next set of rods I buy.

At the moment with my full corks, I still use the Solar P1 butt rests, but place a piece of Camo Duck tape on the section where I push the handles into the rests. Keeps the reels & tips at same distance from everything on the bars for aesthetic purposes (we all know you will get any self respecting carp picking a bait up if the rod tips & reels are all over the place!!!
