I detest Elon Musk, so I tried everything I could to avoid Starlink, but really, it's a fantastic product. I have a starlink mini, and get 250+ mbps download and 30+ upload in some really remote areas, and i never angle it properly, its just fixed to my van roof. Can use it up to 2 months in Europe before having to return. The starlink mini is usually on sale, and once you have it, you don't need to keep a rolling contract, just pay by the month. It's not cheap at £99 a month, but you only need to pay for the months you use it.

I tried all the fancy 5g and 4g wifi things, and no matter what ariel, you will struggle with signal in a lot of places. The only downside of starlink is you need line of site with the sky, it will work under a light tree canopy, but your ping will suffer. Fine for work or streaming, but don't try playing Call of duty lol.

If you can, and rely on the internet it is absolutely the way to go. Unfortunately.

Starlink is Leo sat - low earth orbit.
Which is essentially a 5G base station from space. Well 2Km up.
This will allow for total coverage and I guess things like driverless cars can begin to become a reality
There are fortunately many competitors to Elon and 1000s of Leo's are to be deployed over the next few years with billions pumped into this market.

I'm hoping so. There are competitors, they just aren't in the public consumer market, I spoke to a guy who works for a company that does something similar, but for the maritime and
massive Industry. It's only a matter of time before they roll it out to us goyim. We'll he said I would be allowed to buy it but something like £10k a month lol



Credit where credit is due though, the whole process with starlink is fantastic. Very easy to order, and just works straight out the box. It can be a little power heavy though, well, it's not terrible, around 15 to 40 watts or so, but that adds up if you are just using a powerbank. I found it awful on 12v as well, I run mine on 48v now.

Elon has his faults but for sure he is a clever chap and we do have a lot to thank him for when it comes to technology.

I'll add some info

For the last few years i've been buying pre paid sim cards as additional data to my monthly O2 contract. I started doing this when doing longer trips and needing to do some work on the laptop.

I find the prepaid sim option best nor me as simple purchase from amazon, turn it on in a phone in UK to activate it, use for 30 days up to the limit and bin it when finished. No messing with contracts or cancelling etc. If using loads of data, just buy a few of them.

There are some other options like Three or roaming resellers but I prefer the above.

You can use an E sim which can have some good prices for data but seem to have some small print limits that are not always easy to find. One unlimited deal I looked at actually had a daily limit at full speed and then dropped to a very slow speed. From memory I calculated you could maybe use a maximum of 25 ish GB in a 2 week trip IF using data 24x7 so miles away from unlimited.

I use a small MIFI on 4G+ which gives plenty good enough speeds and easier for sharing between devices when needing to work on the laptop for example or connecting the tablet.

There are some misleading alternatives that look like 5g options and are cheap, but most of them are not as it's the wifi connection they are trying to confuse with the mobile signal. There are some decent not too expensive 5G options but i've never needed the potential extra speed yet. Starlink is great and even better if you can get it on a euro contract as it's far cheaper. I've set one up for friends french lake and it's only about €25 a month. As said by someone else, you can just pay for months when you want it. Will be a faster connection but more cost and power use.

Just in case, you mention receiving texts, that should be free anyway. Replying to them will cost and none of the above options will change that as texts are too and from your mobile number and not through wifi. Whatsapp would work fine through wifi though
