just bought the Daiwa 23 super spod reel and will be using 20lb Korda spod braid with it which is 0.16 My questions is any idea how much 0.38 mono to put on first as backing?

Have a nosey here, but note you'll probably not want the spool maxed with braid

Load braid first add backing ..reverse it off either on a spare spool or distance sticks.
I have 2 x super spods loaded with 38lb whiplash as i dont like leaders so was easy enough though i do count the handle turns if need to re do.

Think your spools are 300m of 0.35?
Using the calc tool 237m of 0.35 means you can fill 300m of 0.16 braid. . .but round it down to 235m to give the braid some tolerance at the spool lip.
You still have to get the correct backing on the spool so I would buy 1000m Korda Basix in 0.35 (12lb) off ebay for £6 and basically fill the Spod spool to the brim . . .then simply wrap out 65m (300-235) = 18 wraps (number rounded up slightly) and discard the mono . . .then fill up with the braid - job done!
