I'm probably way behind the times here but I've just stumbled across the concept of a stretch/cushion leader for long range spodding. A 10m length of 0.26 ish mono between your braid mainline and your braid shock leader, apparently acts as a buffer when hitting the clip hard, makes sense in theory. Anyone do this?

Never heard of this, and sounds a bit frappy.
Edit; having seen the video in post #3 they are using this buffer mono because they are using a braid mainline thats super thin to get the extreme distances but these braids are not durable enough for sensible spodding.

Yeah it does a bit.
I saw this Fox video where he uses one but then a video popped up of Dovey a few years ago fishing long range abroad where he mentions the same thing

I am not a long range spodder (ability) so maybe shouldn't comment however thing like this interest me and appreciate this is just passing on a method that people have seen, but I can't get my head round it.
I would imagine with braid and braided leader at long range most people are at or near the max so hitting the clip too hard - is that a real issue? For me two knots no matter how neat would certainly impact range rather than scare me about whacking a clip. If it's purely down to the clip I would be solving this issue with a small band under it to ensure it doesn't damage line, if it's bounce back I'd lengthen the distance by a metre.

What sort of spod are we talking? The idea of hitting a large spomb hard on the clip with 0.23mm mono doesn't sound that great to me. Maybe if there's a arch in the braid to take up some of the force too, but casting relatively straight to say a island margin...hmm

So two good articles
https://www.etackle.co.uk/using-a-shock-leader-for-spodding/
https://kordatackle.com/knowledge/using-a-leader-for-carp-fishing-everything-you-need-to-know
Across both articles the consensus is:
* Stretch (mono) leader
* Absorbs shock fewer crack-offs
* Easier on technique
* Slight loss in casting efficiency
* Braid leader
* Transfers full power maximum distance
* Requires better timing/technique
* Higher risk if you mess up

Dovey mentions the 'buffer' leader

I have always used Amnesia as a shock leader for distance casting. Has a slight stretch which is perfect for me and feel it compressing and releasing.
