I've seen 2 carp recently where the hook has been in their chin & outside the mouth.

I was wondering what rig mechanics could cause this, or is this all down to chance?
The lake is a bit silty, so it this due to carp grubbing around on an uneven choddy bottom?

I can't remember both rigs, but 1 was a fluro D-rig, wide gape hook, wafter hookbait, 7in's hooklength.

Sounds about right..I've had it a couple of times when fish are gorging on bloodworm.

I've had the same. As soon as you mentioned wafter hookbait. I thought, there's your reason. We're you using a stringer or mesh bag around your hookbait by any chance???. I believe the fish come into feed on the free offerings nearby the wafter hookbait does its wafting bit and grabs holds.. very rarely use wafters these days. Or any form of buoyant bait. As I rarely cast out with out some free offerings around the hookbait.

i had exactly the same this weekend, on a silty bottom on a wide spread of 18/14mm boilies and a tin of corn, hookbaits were tipped with yellow and just bouyant enough that the hook and bottom of the bait were on the ground, fished with a kd rig (i'm old school)
Next visit no sight toppers just plain boilie to see if that makes a difference maybe ?

No stringer or mesh bag & I've also got a decent size bait screw in the wafter to negate even more of the buoyancy.

Will try to switch up the bait next time & see what happens.

Just seems odd that it's been 2 trips now. I do try to play them, rather than bully, & apply carp care. It's not ideal when it happens, but I'm doing by best to minimise the damage anyway

Happens more with blow back style rigs, the sliding ring lets the bait move away from the hook when the carp blows the bait out, the hook stays behind and often catches externally
