I've suffered three frap ups at the butt ring over the last year or so, having never had an issue before (with other set ups)

I'm using 10ft freespirit s lites with 30mm butt rings, 5000Ts with 15lb Gardner pro clear mono. Only fishing 70 yards or so, no major chucks.

My thoughts are

Butt ring too small for the reel/spool size
Spools over filled
Line is a bit curly (not had much use or much time out recently)

Any advice appreciated

You are creating loose coils when reeling in, lead popping etc. maintain a smooth motion and keep tension to the lead. If you get a loop the next time you cast out the line below it picks it up the loop and you get a "wind knot" you know, lead under tension in the air and it manages to knot itself up on the but ring whilst been dragged off the spool with 3oz casted!

Or you could be creating slack line around the spools if you bait you rig with your rod tips vertical, coils losen off and drop down the spool, common with over shotted spools, trust me lol

Also when you spool up ensure the line goes on under tension!

I personally think you need a bigger butt ring on a big pit. You could try wetting the line before casting out. Works with dry line and braid.
Possibly take a few yards off the spools. To put a bit more tension on the line.

I had similar problems with a set of Gravity Xs years ago and that was with 50mm butt rings, never really got to the bottom of it. Just got rid and never looked back, weird but true 🤷"â™‚️

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to respool them and hopefully go have a chuck about down at a local field.

I've been thinking about the 30mm butt ring, I'm sure most rods had 30mm butt rings when tournies first launched.

To add to the 'loose coils', it's happened after I've wrapped up, so perhaps I'm letting it go a bit slack

a possibility is to long a drop which can create slack in the cast are you using a leadcore/leadfree type leader?

Many years ago i started having a problem with the line randomly grabbing the butt ring on the cast i tried different reels, rods 40mm and 50mm butt rings still the same it was only after thinking back i realised the problem started after i switched from tubing to to leadcore which turned out to be to long for the way i was casting

That's most likely it to be honest. These days I fish predominantly with braid and as long as I keep tension on the line by running it through my fingers (with stall on) when coming off the sticks I never have a problem, I never bother wetting it either.

If the lines not had much use over the lst year, is that because you havent been or been using different set ups? Either way, could just be youve lost/changed a bit of technique.
Tiny changes can make big differences.
Could be something really simple like how far you hold your finger away from the spool before release.
May also be worth chucking a bit of water on the spools while you are setting up, let it soak in even a little bit. Wet mono always behaves better than dry

I'm using running rigs on tubing, however I do tend to cast with a fairly long drop, I'll try and shorten it down a bit.

Line use - I've not had much time over the last year, and in addition I carp fished the river and use a different set of rods, so again another few months of the rods/reels sitting idle in the garage.

I had same problem using an emblem spod reel with a 10' spod rod with 40mil butt ring. I figured with the combination of the big spool, small butt ring and short distance between the two, the line coming off the spool was unable go through the butt ring smoothly. I changed to a smaller reel and it cured the problem.

I think the distance between the reel spool lip and the butt ring is more important than most people think. The way people hold the line and release it on the cast is also important.

When you wind the line back onto the reel from the wrap sticks, are you moving the rod tip back and forth using the sticks to keep the tension in the line, or are you allowing the line to come off the sticks slack but using your hand/cloth to keep tension onto the reel?

If it's the latter, then try the former…

I've paid no attention to how far forward the spool is when casting, so I'll make sure it's as far back as possible.

I love the set up, and it covers 80% of my fishing.

I always let the line come off the sticks, I'll definitely pay it a bit more attention.

I've also, embarrassingly trapped the line close to the rod for my whole life, but I've been reading a lot of other articles that also suggest this could cause issues. I've never had issues with other set ups, but percentages do add up…
