I've been watching two Grebe's actively catching fish every dive this morning, and it got me wondering how long does the bait in a solid bag last before you're just fishing a single because all the fry and silvers have cleaned it out?
Added to all that, the faff of keeping everything dry, it has had me wondering if it's really worth it versus a small bag nicked on the hook or just fishing over freebies?

You've probably answered your own question.
Personally I would not use solids if there are lots of active silvers.
One of the lakes I fish has almost no silvers, solid bags work great on there.
My other syndicate lake has loads of silvers so I dont bother with solids

You could still use solids but add a few whole and half boilies as the bulk and just use some 2 and 4mm pellet to fill the voids.

Good question and one I've wondered about myself being a big user of solid bags. When you watch the underwater series it is clear that everything gets blown around when a carp enters the swim so we are probably fishing singles a lot of the time. I try to combat this by using a mixture of pellet sizes as well as injecting with liquids which hopefully keep the attraction in the baited area when everything else is being blown about or eaten by smaller stuff.
Fishing solid bags though is probably the most effective way of fish in weed and for that reason I think they are still a deadly tactic. Whilst mesh is still a good alternative they cannot be loaded with attractive powders, liquids etc and are also not as good in weed.

I don't bother with them at all if there's a large amount of silvers, plus using smaller hookbaits, I value my sleep enough to not want to be woken at 3am by a snotty.

only real advantages over a bag on the hook are guaranteed presentation no matter the bottom & casting accuracy / distance
if you are confident that you deliver those with other methods then there isn't really an advantage.
I think they have a time & place but I very rarely use a solid bag these days - too fiddly, PITA to tie up, limited what I can put in them etc. Much prefer either a small stick for presentation or nothing at all.
