Good evening all,
I lent a friend who has recently started carp fishing one of my bivvies so he could do a weekender.
He rang me yesterday to say he'd be dropping it back to me on Friday then told me it had got some bird ***** on it so he scrubbed it off with Elbow Grease all purpose degreaser.....
Will it have goosed the waterproofing permanently or can it be salvaged with a good wash and something like Fabsil?

Just the way I'd approach it. I'd assume the waterproofing has gone even if not by the degreaser, certainly from the scrubbing as waterproofing is a surface treatment. If the degreaser does remove the water proof layer I'd also be cautious as to where it may have been rinced off the fabric too, if it was.
I guess the important thing is to make sure the degreaser has gone before re applying proofer.
You could see how bad it is 1st by wetting the area for a while, I'd imagine any area without proofing will go darker.

I'll get a hose on it and see what's what. I've had a quick look and can't see where the degreaser has been used.
Would you wash the bivvy with anything before reproofing it or just give it a thorough rinse?

You may not be able to save the bivvy but you could always piss in his kettle to get your own back

It's personal choice really, I've never used a specific product to clean a bivvy or tent before reproofing, just washed with clean water and maybe run a sponge over it.
No harm in using a cleaning product, the likes of Trakker do full kits you can buy. IIRC, Gerry (Oldgeezer) recomended pure natural soap to clean. The most important bit is to get rid of all the soap residue, just like your degreaser before reproofing.
Might be worth looking at camping shops if you want to avoid 'Carp Tax' on cleaning products.
