I suppose to be able to chuck a lead 100m and be fairly forgiving under the tip. My current rods are Shimano ultegras that are well over 20 years old

Then you'll need a rod capable of covering a lot of situations and a reasonable distance. Assuming your casting and potentially using pva bags I'd start looking between 3-3.5lb.
You'll have to forego some playing feel the more you want distance or to be able to put bags at distance.
When I started fishing I could only afford 1 set of rods and bought 3.5lb Harrison Ballistas in 12'6, they've done everything for me except extreme distance casting, they have been used at extreme distance but with baits put out by boat. Those rods were over 20 years old when I replaced them.
I'm a Harrison rod user, they have a lot of lovely blanks. My present set are 13' 3.25lb Torrix however I didn't like them in 12'.

If you can still get a builder with access to Harrison Chimera blanks, 3lb TC, they'd do admirably. Perhaps the Aviator Flex is a modern equivalent. Take a look on Harrisons website for other options.
