Looking for a simple to tie wafter rig,potentially with a stiff stiffer material, but don't want it sticking up off the lake bed awkwardly but like the peace of mind of it not being tangled

Mono or Amnesia D rig, both cheap as chips, I just use what's left over after a re spool.

My advice mate - have a look at the TH rig using the ESP semi stuff. Easy to tie and ultra effective, get the hook to lye flat on the deck with wafters or use it snowman style which is ultra effective......play around it and use a slip D rather than ring up and down the shank. Korda Wide gap in a size 6...you wont go wrong.
It's all you need...

Fluoro D rig with a whipping knot D rather than a blobbed D, or a Ronnie rig (I prefer the extra movement offered by the ring swivel over the traditional turbo German without the ring) with a slip D instead of the conventional method with a ring swivel in the shank with a hook bead. Those are both easy to tie, but I personally prefer a combi-multi, but obviously trickier and more time consuming to tie.
If you’re fishing a lake where you’re constantly getting picked up and dropped by bream and roach, I’d avoid the combi-multi as the D loop can be pulled up to the eye and not reset properly, whereas the Fluoro D and Ronnie will reset better imo.
