Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences on what size boilies are needed to stop coots picking them up? Are 22mm or 24mm big enough?

No they can pick up 24mm.

As below. Once the boilies are soft they'll easily eat them.
Try a tufty torch or dark boilies. Or just use tiger nuts or brazils.

Agree, big baits don't bother them, but you could try it, they will virtually choke themselves eating it
I would go for a bed of smaller baits such as hemp and a wide scattering of boiled baits, they have to come to the surface to swallow them so they will soon tire with the particles
Rock hard pop up and good resetting rig is what I would use, fished a few waters over the years and had problems with coots, pain in the arse, pick the baits up but drop them when they feel the resistance but you do hook the odd few

Cheers all. I don't mind the odd one or two but my problem is there is a family of 9 and the 7 chicks and now big enough to dive and eat whole baits. My spot looks like a coot jacuzzi shortly after introducing any bait😭. Might see if I can just feed them off if I can't find something they cant eat👍

Black baits are what you want. Or try and give them a couple of loaves of bread to fill them up a bit before you bait up

Can't you take a few loaves of bread and chuck them in a vacant swim or an area that no one can fish from that's what I do as a lake I fish is fairly shallow and I get pestered by bird life or bait up just before dark with dark bait or even smaller dark baits so they struggle to pick anything out
