I've never used a spod/spomb rod before but have picked one up with some 30lb braid on the reel and wanted some advice on shock leaders. I am thinking of getting a midi sized spomb.
Do I need one? If so, how strong and long does it need to be? Also what knot is your preference for linking to mainline.
If I need one, what are your recommendations?

Shockleader depending on range really pal. Anything over 100 yards id opt for one.
Rough length is a full rods worth , 5ft drop and 3 turns on the spool. So tie it to the braid on the spool. Wind it on 3 turns. Then put it through all the rings and allow for it to drop by the spigot.

Blimey, I'm pretty sure I can't cast that far so may be safe then!

I use 50lb armakord leader with my spod setup my line is .l0.22mm 37.5lb j braid x8
Just gives a wee bit of reassurance. I use a mahin knot for attaching leader. When done right produces a nice tapered knot and doesnt hinder casting at all.

If your new to spodding I'd suggest ditching the braid and filling your spool with 8lb mono (Daiwa Sensor is fine for this and a bulk spool is cheap) and using an ESP (or similar) tapered shock leader (15-40lbs bs) - an Albright knot would be my preference. Loss of range is marginal in my experience and with the slight buffer the leader will give you, a much more comfortable and less tiring experience when doing a major spodding session
Also much less chance of frap-ups / wind knots and all the other braid related dramas that you WILL encounter when using a heavier braided leader and braided mainline; especially with a wobbly spomb/spod - even experienced spodders can suffer from this on occasion - and replacing expensive mainline braid because the birds nest you've created becomes a depressing all day job to unpick, is not particularly amusing . . .!
TBF the only reason I don't still use the mono/tapered leader combo myself anymore is because I can't be *rsed to carry two utility rods and the braid set up is obvs way better when swopping over to a feature finding (lead/marker float) set up with the same rod . . .plus your effectively only wrapping/clipping up once, once you've found the spot

I use cheap 30lb braid off eBay, never needed a shockleader, just fish it straight through and you'll be fine.

Ditto but 60lb. I would never use braid alone for spodding/distance casting without a nylon shock leader because many years ago my reels clutch slipped and and the braid cut my finger to the bone. It'd probably have taken the top of my finger off if it hadn't slipped so early so I could abort the cast, that was through a glove too!
