Morning all,
I have recently joined a new club and have been focusing my time on one lake which is about 5 minutes from my house.
So far all i have been doing is fishing one swim in a certain spot. I try to make sure that my bait is going on the spot, once every 2 days (even if im not fishing).
I have been thinking though that has got to be a more "well rounded" approach when tackling a new water.
Does anyone have any tips how they go about doing this or could suggest some reading material/video on the topic?

I would ........
+ Be there at sunrise and / or sunset and look for shows
+ Lightly bait 3 or 4 areas around the lake, in particular those swims that see very little use or good depth in margin and good cover
+ If the fish are not giving themselves away, fish each area for 2 or 3 hrs then move on to the next
+ in the winter, keep your sessions short, but at varying time of the day / night as there may be a particular time of day that they feed.
+ dont forget zigs

I tend to do the opposite to you and try to get around the lake as much as possible in my first few sessions. Make it so the fish are used to seeing your bait in various places and I will then settle on an area if I see something, or more importantly start catching regularly there compared to the other spots. The size of the lake will also be a factor along with stock levels of carp and other species. Finding the fish and identifying their routes and feeding habits is important, and you will struggle to do that with your eggs all in one basket on 1 spot.

Hi mate I would also
do your own thing yes take advice off people but be wary they may be giving you false advice to throw you off,be wary about who you talk to if you tell them youve caught as you may not get a swim or the swim you fish again,also keep bait going in if you can and not be seen doing it.....and most important keep at it the rewards will come I think you can learn from a blank session when you try to think what you may have done wrong and what you can do to catch a fish.
Think out side the box as well if people are doing certain things like pva bags of pellets and a boilie try boilie crumb with oils/liquids in bag on bag glugged hook baits etc and also I had people fish bright pop ups try dark ones etc
Being different may catch you a bonus fish or 2 if everyone is fishing more or less the same eg: Spodding particles or boilie approach try pva stringers or a bag/mesh with half a boilie on hair things like that that no one's really does anymore.

Ignore all the pony you'll read on this thread.
You're an angler just go and fish it, it's not work or a millitary exercise, there are no prizes given out at the end.

thanks, I haven't asked anyone at the lake for advice because like you say, you just dont know if they are being honest or not and you dont want to go down the wrong rabbit hole.
This is what i have seen so far:
- a lot of people spodding on spots so presuming particle
- I have heard the odd big PVA bag hit the water at night, sounded like a bowling ball hit the water if im honest
- I have been told that the most popular rig on the venue is the ronnie (surprise...)
Watercraft is something i need to work on which is what has prompted this question.

As for my water, nobody asks or gives advice, probably because there's a certain satisfaction about getting a result off the back of your own work. (not that asking is wrong)
PS, if you re-read (probably not your strongpoint) my post you'll note it's all advice, especially the diary bit.

I also seem to have got a grip of the lake in the 9 years I've been on there on/off I don't follow what others do or tell me,like fish single baits like bright pop ups,I like to do my own things and work it out myself
