Going through my garage have found some unused spools of line, things like gt-hd etc. They must be around 6-7 years okd. They're all unopened and been kept out of sunlight. Would they be okay to use still, or should i bin them?

They'll be fine mate. Test a few bits. Cut a foot off and check knots and shock pulls. But I'm sure it will be fine

Do not spool up until you do some knots and test to destruction.

Old mono can deteriorate and some brands are worse than others, this is often the cause of the odd "bad batch" wham.

If it's in a dry dark place it will be fine. Mono will take ages to break down even in the ground.

yes everyone knows mono is affected by sunlight and if stored correctly can last a long time BUT AS YOU SAY IT CAN AND DOES still deteriorate !
I once found a couple of boxes of Catana mono in a cupboard been in there 2 or 3 years but it was breaking well below what it should have sadly
so as you say you really need to test it

For how cheap a new spool of line is I personally wouldnt take the risk as its probably one of the most important items of tackle. You also dont know how long its sat on the rack in the tackle shop before you buy it either.

That's true, will just use it as backing as got 6 new spools to fill.

Mono will last lot longer than the manufacturer's will have you believe.

Be your own judge. Snatch test it wrap a couple of meters around your hand give it a sharp pull. If it gives after a few diffrent attempts I'd bin it.
