I used to use Longshank hooks many years ago with no problems but stopped using them when I joined a lake where they were banned.
Do people still use them? If so, what brand / model do you favour now or what alternatives have you found?
I like to use a longer piece of silicon tubing or shrink tubing I never used them without which is maybe why I never had any mouth damage issues!?

I used to love using longshank but came to realise if the fish were big at least over 35lb min then they were fine
but smaller fish with their smaller mouth suffere mouth damage ? similar to the damage bent hooks used to cause
so now I am please so many UK fisheries are banning them as I stopped years ago unless fishing big fish waters like Rainbow etc
and as we dont have that many lakes in the uk with 60lb plus fish in
I dont see any advantage to using them or the need for them
so a total BAN in the uk I would vote for and love to see it

I use long shank hooks a lot and have never had the slightest problem with them at all. Not once have I experienced any mouth damage that wouldn't have also been caused by a short shank hook. If anything they cause less damage as they turn quicker and generally hook very slightly further into the mouth resulting in fewer hook pulls.
These are straight shank hooks used with a small kicker or line aligner, they are not curved shank hooks. I must admit I have seen damage with long shank curved hooks and don't use them anymore.
The Nash long shank twisters are good and although not available anymore the longshank incisor from Gardner were superb.

This has also been my experience. Hook holds tend to be at least an inch back and I use about half an inch of shrink tube. Never get mouth damage or I wouldn't use them. The Nash twisters are my choice, but have also used the Jason Hayward LS if you want them pre sharpened.

Love a big old size 4 longshank me.

As OG says, I think it is smaller fish that like the Bent Hook rig suffer mouth damage with longshank hooks. I never noticed any damage with either but I'd personally put an arbitrary 20lb on size of the fish.

After speaking with angling iron and IB hooks, I think you'll find they are the exact same hook as the ace ones used to be. All the same manufacturer. Carpsirit as well. I ordered from all 3 as was on a hook checking spree and they're all identical

I had a nightmare with the Size 4 ESP longshanks. I dropped more fish than I landed on them. Coupled with a 3oz lead, I dread to think what the hook was doing as it dropped off. Swapped over to chods and light leads and haven't dropped one yet.
It could be a multitude of factors though. I was boilie fishing, with a grouping of 18millers close by, so maybe the fish weren't 'righting' themselves prior to being hooked. 8in long hooklinks, so the rig should have been going in far enough. Who knows. All I do know is you shouldn't drop 3 fish on the bounce to hookpulls.

Yes, that was what I was thinking too. I like beaked points and with long shanks, I think you must be onto a winner.

They look like a nice pattern, but I'm sorry, the name is ridiculous!
You just can't have a long shank AND a wide gape: if you do both it is quite simply just a bigger hook!

I've recently been using esp Slammer hooks in sizes 5 and 4 and I'm very impressed.... But if the 4s were 3mm longer and the 5s 2mm longer I reckon they would be just about perfection... Hopefully someone from esp is reading this.

Hi mate I've just bought the 4s and 5 slammers as well, sent the 4s back as the gauge is a bit brutal for me. Using these as claws and extending shank with line aligned shrink. Seem perfect to me so far. That's my bottom bait rig this summer sorted 👌
