Evening guys
I have owned a set of shimano 5500 xtb reels for many years and absolutely love them. But I came across of shimano speedmaster reels the other day on eBay. Never seen these before and really like the look of them. Not had a chance to find a shop that has them in stock nearby so was wondering if anyone had owned both and had any comparison.

I can only speak for the speedmasters as I own a set and I really like them. I've always used daiwa reels for my carp fishing but wanted to try some Shimano's as I have various other fishing reels made by them that I really like. Went for those as they sat nicely within my budget and have been very impressed.

your not getting nothing in the much of an upgrade tbh,the drag on the speed master is the one turn to lock up where as the xtb have the drag caps. speed master price point is below what the xtb was. if there's nothing world with your xtb I would certainly keep them

I would get your hands on them if you can Lee, I would expect you to find your XTBs to be much better quality than the Speedmaster.

I didn't rate the Speedmaster at all when I had a look. More Sonik quality than older Shimano.
Saying that, I might just not like the feel of newer reels. Haven't seen anything worth a look since the Penn Affinity 7000 Ltd came out about 10 years ago.

I've noticed a big lack of quality in newer offerings from Shimano and Diawa , they just don't build em like they used to , not to say there's anything wrong with the new stuff , it just seems both manufacturers are using more bits of plastic on the reels .
I wouldn't buy a new entry level reel from either manufacturer although I do own a lot of older reels from both manufacturers , just my opinion of course

Both Daiwa and Shimano do still make some very high quality reels but there not cheap, sal****er twin power, Stella, saltega,certate.

The ive had most of the certates over the years and the latest ones are superb, best reels ive ever owned.
