Heli-safe tubing kit issue (15 posts / 5,637 views)

Have started using the Korda heli-safe tubing kit. Am really liking it, except for one issue which is that the tubing slides pretty easily out of the anti-tangle sleeve above the heli-safe, exposing the main line and presumably also ruining bite indication if a fish were to move towards me. Am using Korda dark matter tubing with it, so you'd think it would all marry up perfectly.

Am figuring may need to superglue the tubing into the sleeve to fix it in place. Anyone else used these and experienced the same issue?

While we're at it, does anyone know if you can get spare locking collars for the heli-safe droppers? Managed to spill the ones for my spares and have no need to drop the lead. Don't really want to spend £6.50 for a new set of heli-safe droppers when all I need is the tiny little plastic collars to stop the lead dropping. But can't see these collars advertised anywhere.

Are you using the little witches hat that goes inside the tubing that stops it pulling through

That could well be the issue, it's there but maybe I'd not been using it properly.

Otherwise a small float stop as suggested would do the trick at the other end too, good call, thanks.

I've had tubing in one weed bed and the fish in another in the past , yes the witches hat is deigned to keep it place , but if using a lead clip I've found the stop works and i keep it on the line for different set ups
I don't know if it will stop the weed bed scenario happening again , I may have been unlucky

I've had the tubing pop off from the witches hat several times allowing the tubing to ride up the line.

I don't really rate the kit if I'm honest.

I'm the opposite. Been using it for 18 months and never had that happen.
Like others said have a look at the witches hat.

Whenever I've had to re set it up I have to watch the Rob Burgess YouTube guide as cannot remember how to do it properly. So might be worth a watch.

Those little collars are a pain and they dont come separately.
Korda should really sell sections individually as I have lot of top sections and springs that illl never use.

Which tubing are you using try a narrower diameter
I use the ESP tungsten tubing and it's fine the witches hat fits perfectly

Just to round this off, the issue was indeed the witches hat. All sorted now.

Went fishing this weekend and at first tried to fiddle with it to get the witches hat in place. While fishing I noticed the tubing still wasn't in place so resolved to completely re-rig the setup. Re-did the first one (took quite a while, really struggled on the bank to get the anti-tangle sleeve fully over the tubing enough to push the witches hat firmly in place, had to use a baiting needle in the end to pull the tubing through the sleeve). Then when reeling in the second rod to re-rig, realised I had a fish on, for which was no bite indication whatsoever, due to this issue. Sadly I lost it, shame as felt like a good fish.

Moral of the story, if you use the tubing kit, make sure the witches hat is in place!

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but isn't the principle of using tubing as a leader in effect flawed somewhat..? I mean if you get a large fish pulling a helicopter rig against the tubing wont it split and then the swivel be acting direct on the mainline anyway?? I was going to buy some of these but will probably just go have a look at them at some point to check this out but if anyone can tell me if thats correct it would be helpful.

No - Korda do an adaptor to convert the Helisafe to use with rig tube - its includes a short solid plastic tube the swivel sits over after a take, and still allows the helisafe to drop the lead. The rig tube slides inside that plastic tub into the top of the heli-safe and is secured inside using the witches hat thing that compresses the rig tube inside the plastic tube the swivel sits on - hard to explain in text but when you see it its fairly clear - works out expensive buying the bits, but it does work well.

I've recently started using this, but I seem to be dropping leads when I shouldn't. On a couple of occasions the lead has gone as soon as I've picked up the rod to reel in. Im fishing a very weedy lake, so I guess a bit of weed on the hook is causing enough resistance to drop the lead?

Next time out, I'm going to swap the silver springs for the red ones and hope this helps?

Same thing happened to me when I first started using them.
Switched over to the red springs and now I don't loose a lead on every retrieval.

That's good to hear. Sounds like that's what I need to do.

I find the tubing always splits above the wiches hat letting the tubing come loose. I put a tiny smear of tungsten putty round the tubing before pulling it into the collar.
Are you sure?
