Hi all, looking to get myself a spodding setup and have a question on braid.
A lot of folks suggest getting a 30lb braid and then a 50lb shockleader. But why not just use a 50lb braid all the way through?
Seen people saying thicker braid won't cast as well, which for sure is well known that thicker line diameters hinder casting. However looking at Berkley Whiplash and the 50lb stuff is only 0.18 mm diameter. That's under half the thickness of my 15lb CM90 mono that casts very nicely indeed.
If a 0.38 mono casts perfectly well then logically there shouldn't be any issues casting a 0.18mm braid... unless I'm missing something?
If anything would think that the knot to join the lines would be more detrimental than the extra bit of thickness.

The shockleader is to stop getting your finger sliced open, some 30lb stuff will open you up better than a Stanley knife.....and 30lb braid has no elasticity in it like mono...

The heavy braid shockleader is used to take the force of the cast, the shock loading. Its not used for finger protection. I would not be using ANY braid without a quality finger stall. I use one for any distance casting, even with heavy mono if the drag slips on the cast you will be wearing the dreaded white stripe.

I've always thought the heavier leader is to take the shock of the cast. Casting a 7-8oz Spomb or whatever it makes sense to have a heavy shock leader to take the force.

I use 30lb braid straight through with a Gardner finger stall, suits me, never had a crack off or sliced a finger.

Having learnt the hard way, avoid the cheap eBay Chinese braid and buy a decent braid like whiplash or Diawa J, you'll get less or no wind knots.
I use 50lb Diawa J 8 straight through for short medium range with an impact spod and 30lb Whiplash with 50lb leader for longer range.
Always use a finger stall, really not worth the risk of not using one.

I've used the cheap Chinese spectra braid for spodding for many years and never had a single issue with it. I use the 28lb with a 45lb braided shockleader.

I use Fox submerge in 40lb when braid fishing and have it on my application rod as well never had no issues without a leader copes well and casts well, far enough for my needs anyway.

Thank you. Went with what I could get my hands on quickly, which was Fox Exocet spod braid (20lb) and Korda Arma Kord 50lb floating braid shock leader (and a finger stall). Hopefully it does the trick.

I had problems with a cheap braid, it didn't seem anywhere near as strong as the stated BS and I kept getting wind knots, switched to whiplash and it's been perfect.
I obviously got a a very cheap dodgy Chinese braid

I had problems with Power Pro braid, it was being 'stripped'. The outer layer was sheering and sliding up or down. This was on pike rods and spod rod.
I bought 50lb Angry fish 4x PE line to replace it, and it has been fine on all rods. When marker, leading around or spodding I have put a mono leader on, 30lb Amnesia, cos I like my fingers.
