I'm after a budget spod rod and reel, ie something around £100 . I'm not a big caster and only fish small waters so it's not going to get as much abuse as it could just need something that can lob a loaded spomb 60ish yards.
AD have a sale on their Advanta gear at the moment so could get this rod and reel for £70ish

I hvae the Sonik rod and find it great, I have the Shimano spod reel though. I f you can stretch you can get both for around £120

Go to Home and Leisure ( a seller) on Ebay , you'll get the Sonik combo much cheaper than that.

I have the AD set-up, hate spdding so didn't want to spend a lot on it but had the requirement to get bait out a decent distance which was not possible with a throwing stick.
both rod and reel are really good for the price on the 2-3 times I have used it thus far.
The only big negative is the terrible line clip on the reel, hard to get the braid under the clip and all feels a bit sharp.

Personally I would avoid the Sonik deal.
I bought a Sonik Vader Spod/Marker Hybrid rod, and the bottom 3 rings have all had the line guide fall out.
I have had to replace the butt ring myself, and reshaped the frames on the next 2 rings and Araldited the liners in place.

When I got my first spod setup I had a similar criteria to you, didn't want anything fancy as it was only being used rarely on smaller waters.
I opted for the Chub RS & Shimano Aerlex, came in around £95.
Fox, Shimano, Wychwood, Daiwa etc all have an entry level spod rod around £45-55, paired with a Shimano Aerlex spod reel you'll be golden.
If you are not adverse to 2nd hand, Facebook marketplace is worth looking at usually some bargains to be had.

Sonik are good stuff and great value, maybe he was unlucky but I bought a couple of bits from them and there great

The rod was the first problem, (and I have heard a few other people have had the same issue).
I have had to start packing it separately from my rod sling. I think when it is left packed, but set up, and you get any rod movement, the butt or tip moves in the straps holding them together, the soft ring frames mishape and the liners pop out.
I also bought the SK-tec chair. I cannot fault the comfort, it has relieved my sciatica, I sit straight, but the front adjustable legs do not stay extended if weight goes on them. They slide back in. In other words, either I'm heavy, or the leg clamps needs to be stronger. You can basically only use the chair on flat level ground.

Agreed, ive had a few sonik bits and none have had any faults at all
My spod rod gets thrown about and really not looked after at all and the rings are all perfect still

I too have the Sonik rod, bought it at one of the shows a fair few years ago. Bought it as a deal with a Mitchell reel and a spool of braid. It was a bargain at about £60, but like I say it was a fair few years ago.
I'm not a massive user of the rod because I also don't like spodding, but I guess it's been used around 50 times over the years. By the very nature of spod rods and reels, they get a lot of abuse with spod mix getting everywhere. My set up is pretty grubby I have to say, but it's still working fine and I've had no problems with any of it, still going strong.

With this setup I can easily hit the distances you are talking about with a large or medium spomb.
