I own a set of aviators with minima ring set I have only used braid a handful of times on them but there is already evidence of cutting into the ring lining, this is only visible on the 2 rings down from the tip eye the 20, 25mm ( tip eye is kigan ).
I have heard in the past that there not the best for braid but wasn't using braid when built them, will probably go back to Kigan 3d rings that i have used before, anybody else suffered similar problems ?

Most rod builders don't recommend minimas / vortex airs if you are a regular braid user for this very reason

And yet some manufacturers are selling thier spod and marker rods with them fitted as standard. Recently bought the daiwa longbow spod rod for use with 0.18 braid and leader, if these rings aren't up to it surely I would be entitled to a full refund as it says nothing about not using braid with the rod or I wouldn't have bought it.

Yes it is strange. I bought one of the daiwa longbow spod and marker rods a couple of years ago but i specifically got the older spec model that had didn't have the minima guides

I love daiwa blanks but i dont think they really care as they just want to sell as many rods as possible and minimas were all the rage not long ago so they stuck them on there rods solely to sell more. Would never have a rod with minimas on, kigan 3d's are bullet proof and have never let me down. Daiwa make superb blanks but are massively let down by sticking minimas on them to suit the current fashion.

I'm pretty sure Cotswold rods popularised minimas over here. The usp being that their flagship light model needed guides as light as possible with a big diameter for use with fluoro and heavy mono. Everybody claims to have been using braid for years but in reality it was a very small minority when minimas came about.
I've worn minimas and I'm still dubious about them but on a spod rod, where the initial force is usually via a thicker leader, the benefits of fast recovery and lighter swing weight may exceed the potential for £10 worth of rings wearing every 3-5 seasons.

I dont know the answer but i thought a heavier test curve rod would carry the extra weight of guides better rather than lighter rods? and a lot of spod rods aren't as tippy as and dont rely on tip speed like some faster action lighter tc rods.
I wonder how many people would actually cast say a 6 oz spod on a 4.5tc spod rod further with lighter guides than the same rod with lined guides, or even notice a difference

I'm also a fan of daiwa blanks and used the xld's for some time. Tried the infinity 13ft 4.25tc when looking at distance rods and loved how far it cast in my hands but the minima rings put me off and could not buy the blanks at the time so bought different rods. I'm also on my second pair of scopes in 2.25tc and the first set guides were still good but don't use braid on them. As has been said the much thicker leader may not wear the guides on casting and being a spod rod in shouldn't have much loads on them retrieving a spod or spomb. Time will tell I guess.

You may find people casting worse with the lighter guides, it speeds up the action and closes the window of peak performance. Everyone is quick to use lighter guides but don't realise you can afford a lighter blank to carry them and keep the same recovery speed

Yes that might happen, i also think certain blanks will benefit from lighter guide set ups just not convinced about most spod rods.
The other thing with spod rods and marker rods to an extent they get thrown about and mistreated more than most peoples fishing rods so may be more susceptible to damage or bend guides easier i want guides that are more durable. if im having rods built i find it hard to see past fuji and 3d kigan's

Had loads of different guides on different rods over the last fifty years and never had an issue with any. Odd thing is daiwa put the minima's on the df range and in my opinion spoilt a high end product and I find it strange that they also sold the infinity slim powers with fuji k series which I would far rather have and would love to try a 13ft 3.75tc infinity with these in 40mm advanced pattern.

Yeah I wouldn't mind if they had been used heavily with braid but they have literally done 9 nights with braid mainline which seems a short time, I'm going to have them replaced with kigan as had these on my others rods 👍

I am in Canada and here we fish for carp with braid 40-50 pd . Two sets of my distance rods are with minima rings , never had problems with them , the rings are US made . Maibe the rings on your rods are low quality

I had a set of aviators custom made with vortex air rings and a kigan tip ring. I was also concerned about using braid and have for now gone back to using fluoro but I was advised by the rod builder he has not had any complaints using them with braid providing the tip ring is Kigan
