Approximately how many bait firms are there, in England, and how many of them, who sell "their own" flavour range, actually source their flavours from the same flavour house ? How many of the top UK flavour manufacturers, supply the carp industry, with flavours that are specifically compatible with bait production ?
It´s understandable that the larger, more renowned bait firms with deep pockets, have the funds to employ an inhouse flavorist, but the smaller firms have to rely on firms like RD Campbell, Catchit etc, then tweak certain flavours( blend or add EOs etc), to produce custom flavours. What % of the excess stock/rejects from the top flavour houses, is sold off cheaply within the bait industry ?

I may be wrong, but dont a lot of the smaller, non profit driven bait manufacturers, source their ingredients from suppliers/producers of human grade products rather than bait specific companies?

I would say quite a lot use the same flavour houses but personally I think the flavour profile is least important aspect of the bait anyway especially a good feed bait.

Question is, are those flavours selected, purely for the anglers nose, or specific olfactory/gustatory attributes ?
Some smell nice but are absolute crap when used in carp bait.

Absolutely no idea. The bait i use is made by people who have forgotten more about bait making and ingredients than i would ever hope to know. I have faith thats its some of the best stuff available, and thats all i need to know. I can then worry about the rest of the stuff involved in catching them

When you see someone mention only food grade ingredients, he aware that means virtually nothing

The guy in the bait shed, either rolls on a tight budget, buying both human food grade and carp specific ingredients, to suit his needs, or doesn´t have a budget, and sources the best quality ingredients, despite the price. Rolling your own bait, usually costs more than shop bought, when putting together a well thought out quality bait. As for flavouring, i´d avoid all of the confectionary stuff, if i don´t get some sort of data about them.

The human grade thing is a load of rubbish. Do they use human grade bird food? Human grade lt94? You can buy good quality and fresh animal food grade products which is good enough for Fido or pepper pig so plenty good enough for carp

Human grade is generally referring to milk products
Or perhaps real fish
Or minamino
Or sweetners
Flavours.......a bit of everything
Most ingredients are animal feeds

you may be interested to know that whist there are around 3000 ingredients which can and are used for human flavours
only around 1200 of these ingredients are allowed to be used in animal feed flavours .
