I've been watching videos on spring fishing and apparently it's best to get a swim that's North facing especially if it has shallow swims. I may be asking a dumb question but what is North facing? Do you use a compass and whatever the North end if the lake you go to so you are facing south? Or do you sit on the south side facing the North?

Remember a simple rule.
The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
As the sun moves across the sky, we are in the northern latitudes, so approximately mid day, the sun is in the south. North is the opposite direction.
You set up on the North side of the lake as that gets most of the sun for most of the day. The northern side is supposedly warmer because of that sunlight.
It does not work on every lake. Spend time watching and looking for fish as much as possible. Learn and remember.

It is the direction you are looking in i.e you are looking (facing) to the north
so in this instance, for it to be a north facing swim it would be on the southern side of the lake looking to the northern side

If we get a spell of mild weather, it's normally comes from the Sargasso Sea in a South Westerly direction and so the North East side of the lake will often be where the warmer water will be pushed. Any floating bug life will also be concentrated in the area.
A freezing Northerly or North Easterly will cool the water and conventional wisdom says to fish on the back of the wind and fish the Northern side of the lake
I always check the predicted wind direction before a fishing trip and look at a Google map of the lake and that gives me a head start on where the fish might be. Doesn't always work but it does give me more confidence!

Seems to be a couple of different opinions on here. Very confusing haha

Your wording is wrong Gubzy. You want to be on the north bank ie south facing if you wish to follow this "rule".

you want to be on the north bank facing the sun which will be rising to your left and setting to your right, that way the bank your sitting on will recieve sun all day and warm the margins up...any warm southerly wind will be pushing into you,any cold northerly wind will be coming over your head.

I fish a lake with an island in the middle and a gravel hump at the eastern end. In cold weather the fish go to the south side of the island and into the shallower water at the eastern end. This spot is only fishable from a couple of swims on the south bank. There are tall trees on the south bank and on the island so the only place that gets the sun is the south side of the island in the afternoon.
